Topwater Rod?

Post by drdetroit3 »

Looking for a topwater rod to throw spooks, and other walking baits?
I like the Dobyns fury series, any suggestions?

Thanks

Powell 734 is the best for a super spook IMO. Dobyns 734 is also very good.

Been having a blast with the Phenix feather M 6’9” 6-12 lbs this year with small poppers. Last year used M colts and fury’s and found they were a tad heavier after 4-5 hours of AM topwater. Got rid of my expride’s due to subpar warranty. Can’t go wrong with Dobyn’s warranty!

In the Fury Series I'd say a 733C or a 734C. I made the Champ 734C many years ago as my personal Super Spook rod. I made it a tad slower to be "perfect". The Fury Series 734C is just a bit faster than the Champ 734C so many guys drop down to the FR 733C for walking baits. THX!!!!

I use a Fury 734c for walking baits and it does the job well for both bass and stripers. If you like your power on the softer side, go 733.

Gary, when will you have the Extreme series back in stock? I want to give my son my Champ XP line up but I want to get the Extremes to replace them first

I use a DC 705CB glass. I also have a
Champ 734C but prefer the glass rod. I use it for all my topwaters. Thanks Gary for making great rods!

The Dobyns Fury is definitely my go to choice when it comes to walking the dog type lures like spooks. St Croix Avid 6'6" is another great option, and IMO works better with bigger lures.

Any of your favorite rod company's Med/Heavy, Fast tip 7'-7'4 Rod will do the job without wearing you out. I like a Loomis IMX 843 for open water and an IMX 844 for Frogs. Same thing in Spinning for poppers.

For a walking bait rod you could try one of our Colt Series. The Colt 734C is a great feeling rod for spooks. It's $79 retail too. Worth a shot really. It's a surprising great feeling rod for $79. I have a bunch of guys using it for Super Spooks and 1/2oz traps too. Just info. THX!!
