California will now issue 365-day fishing licenses

Post by WB Staff »

California will now issue 365-day fishing licenses, under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Previously, the state issued a calendar-based license that expired on Dec. 31, regardless of when it was issued. Assembly Bill 817, authored by Assemblyman Jim Wood, D-Santa Rosa, also authorizes the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to allow for sport fishing licenses to be displayed electronically on a mobile device

It did take them a hell of a long time to do something so logical. They knew it was unfair, but they still did it for far too long.

Hows it "unfair"? Thought its pretty simple jan 1 to dec 31,,,,now your gonna have to pay close attention to the day you bought your license

I meant for people going to buy their license for the first time after Jan.1, or to buy it again after not having fished for some time.

For the folks that decide to go fishing in July it's a good deal. Now they get a full year of fishing, just like the guy that bought one in January. Just buy one in January, then you will know when it expires, just like before.

Just set a reminder on your smart phone for 1 year from the date you buy it. You can even set an additional reminder to give you an extra week to buy a new one. This has needed to happen FOREVER! The state finally did something smart.

This is awesome. The possibly only single positive thing from the current administration, despite lots of non-positive stuff...

I would think... with the computer age we have now days they (the state) will send you a reminder via email or snail mail that your license is about to expire......I think getting a full year out of the ridiculous fees they charge is the right thing to do...and wow..... have we gone full swing from just a few years ago, wearing our license around our necks for Law to see (some folks still do) to be displayed electronically on a mobile device..

I think this is a win win for all.... even thou Newsom is a POS !!!

This is not a great nor bad thing

It is the one single thing that Ca has done that makes any kind of sense unless you like bending over

There was more to the bill then just the 365 license.
I particularly like the last sentence below. $31.25 license. Says its the base fee. Is that what were paying now but then they add $20 in taxes?
They also have until January 2023 to enact all this.
The only time I see game wardens is the first week of the new year trying to nab anyone without a new license so this is going to screw that up for em.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. Section 1050.4 is added to the Fish and Game Code, to read:
1050.4. (a) On or before January 1, 2023, the department may provide an option to display a sport fishing license, validation, report card, or other sport fishing entitlement issued pursuant to this code or regulations adopted pursuant to this code electronically on a mobile device.
(b) A person who displays a sport fishing license, validation, report card, or other sport fishing entitlement electronically on a mobile device in accordance with this section shall be deemed to be in compliance with any requirement imposed pursuant to this code or regulation adopted pursuant to this code to possess or affix the entitlement.
(c) This section does not apply to a tag that is required to be affixed to a fish pursuant to this code or a regulation adopted pursuant to this code.
SEC. 2. Section 7149.05 of the Fish and Game Code is amended to read:
7149.05. (a) A sport fishing license granting the privilege to take any fish, reptile, or amphibian anywhere in this state for purposes other than profit shall be issued to any of the following:
(1) (A) A resident, 16 years of age or older, for the period of a calendar year, or, if issued after the beginning of the year, for the remainder of the year, upon payment of a base fee of thirty-one dollars and twenty-five cents ($31.25).

So I grew up in the east bay and have resided in western Colorado the past 6 years. I will say that the license fees in California are mind blowing. In Colorado I can get a 365 day fishing/small game hunting license combo for $51.68. That’s fishing and hunting everything except big game and turkeys. Oh but if I want to shoot an elk.... $56.88 for the license, either sex. I spent over $200 two years ago to be able to shoot ducks in Cali as a nonresident for 5 days because of the license fees. Where is it all going? For 5 days of duck hunting in Cali I literally could have killed 2 elk and an entire year of small game for bout half the price out here. A nonresident fishin/either sex elk license is $688 here.

holy snikes batman... california doing something to be honest, damn man what a day... I buy mine every jan 1st outta habit since i've lived out west forever now, but I grew up where it was a year from the day you bought your license, like they say when they offer you the dang thing... I've always felt like this west coast "year" was a rip off since you have to buy it on Jan 1st to actually get your time they state you get, as expensive as it is to fish in cali, it will make folks more inclined to pay instead of cheat when they get what they pay for fairly I feel, congrats to whoever wrote this into existence and the good people to make that so... im impressed :D
