When Santa is done delivering gifts, he should take the month of January off,
or go to one of the many sports shows. January is the slowest month of the year
for northern California bass fishing, though toads are sometimes caught in January if you
know how and where to fish for them. Fishing for spotted bass at a lake like Oroville,
where I was yesterday, can be lots of fun, but the size is just average. There are a few
large bass caught in January, but the better bite usually start with the first warm front
in mid-February. In a drought year like this (so far!). the water will be clear and the
bass deeper! Warmer, muddy rain water will bring them to shallow water quicker.
Spinnerbaits can be the most effective baits - vibration and bulk!
