Berryessa?

Post by biteme »

Hey guys my Dad and I are thinking about making the trip to berry. I haven't fished it in years and now living in NV it's a long trip. Does anyone know if it's worth the trip down the hill right now? Are the rock gardens under water?
Also, do you guys know if a safe hotel that will allow for a 21ft bass boat?

Dad has never seen berry and I want him to see it at some point in life.

I know a lot of people here fish tournaments and don't want to post much. If that's the case a PM would be great also. We just fun fish. Thanks for any info!

Rent a cabin at pleasure cove marina. Yes BERRYESSA is definitely a bucket list. Fishing is ok, but only getting better. Have fun!

Hmm doesn't look like they're renting them. I went all the way out to June and even weekdays say nothing available.

I heard a rumor of new ownership at pleasure cove. Same people bought Steel Park also. I also heard $30 launches now. Can anyone confirm?

Was there yesterday...no clue on new owners. Gate was open at 5 and nobody around other than a boat inspection dude checking boats.... left at 3 30 nobody at pay shack... locked up tight... free launch... we didn't even see a pay site or signs stating fees.

It looked like guys were staying at little cabins.

Lake is 54 degrees and the south (dam) end is the dirtest I have ever seen it. Weird color with some reddish/orange color to the water the north has a nice color to it....fishing is on the slow side.

Berryessa turns on in March.Make it a combo trip and fish Clearlake too. Only about 50-60 miles apart.

This is a fantastic idea - both lakes are low so I wouldn't push too far into the summer. Berryessa should be popping off in March considering what I saw up there last weekend. I'm not sure of a Rock Garden at Berry, I know that name for Folsom Lake but the lake is super low. Low water ramp at Markley, Capell looked high and dry. I would also recommend the cabins at Pleasure Cove (yes they are renting them) or there are hotels in Winters.

Man a week off with two days at Berry and 3 at Clear Lake sounds like a good prescription for memories with dad.

Thanks guys, lol I can't give my dad any ideas as he always talks about Clearlake. I was born in Ukiah and I fished the lake for YEARS until we moved to NV. Dad has only fished it once with me and we had a good time.
My mom has some health issues and he can't be away very long. But maybe we'll skip berry and do CL as I know that would make his year haha.

Thanks everyone for the info. This topic turned out to be a lot better than I thought it would be. The suggestions are all great!

Thanks again!

You can’t go wrong at either lake in the spring - Berry is just beautiful and has all three species of Bass. Clear Lake is a bass factory and can bring some giants and footballs alike. Shoot me an IM when you get set on a date and we can chat.

Is this kind of trip possible with Clear Lake's mussel inspection? Is it possible to pass the screening when your boat was on another lake the day prior?

I'm putting together plans for a similar trip next month -- likely Camanche & Clear Lake -- and I'm trying to figure out the logistics w/ inspections.

Thanks!

Depends on which lake is fished first:
At CL, you have about a zero chance of anyone actually inspecting your boat when you buy stickers.
At Camanche ..... your boat will be Inspected.
If Camanche is the "second stop" make sure you have pulled drain plug from the day before and your bilge is 100% dry. Inspector sees one drop of water drip from bilge at Camanche ... and you ain't launching.

Thanks Dave and Michael, this is super helpful.

I just got my first boat this winter. Had a tough time passing inspections in East Bay (the boat had been out of the water for 2 weeks, but the inspectors found moisture in the prop with a flashlight). So I guess I'm still paranoid about that... Don't wanna plan a trip and then end up shore fishing...

Sounds like I should be good though doing CL second, and just drying down the boat really good. Thanks

Holy smokes its really that bad? I fish a lake that has a inspection some times but they just give it a look over and if they see anything they spray down the inside with some foam kind of stuff and off you go.

I dont think I could handle going through all of that where they use a light to see if there's water in the prop. Crazy.

When i fish Comanche or Pardee, i would put a towel in my bilge and livewells. I would stop before the turn off to check the bilge blow it out with compressed air and be sure she is clean and dry. yes they can be that bad, even in the rain they are going to check for any standing water.
