Poling through the delta weeds

Post by Randy Turner »

Hello
Last week I went upriver on the delta to fish one of my favorite inside weed line rip rap stretches only to find it low tide with the weeds so thick that even my 107MG could not cut a path to get me through. In fact, I had to fire up the big motor to pull me back out when I punched into the weeds to far. I got to thinking about a florida tourney I had watched on TV recently where the boats were poled through the thickest weeds and wondered if it would work on the delta?
Has anybody tried this and if so, what do you use as a push pole?
Thanks
Randy

Gene has 'em at the Hook, or make your own pretty cheap....

Very common and a must have in the delta!

I have a flats boat w/ a poling tower and have done a fair amount of poling. Poling a boat straight takes practice and a fair amount of muscle, especially in shallow water w/ vegetation. Since you cant pole from the center of the transom like I can, you'll probably be poling from the bow area. A short pole of about 8-10' I think would probably be best. I dont think you would want/need a full sized pushpole like I have. They are cumbersome and very long due to the fact they are made for skiffs w/ poling towers that put you about 4 feet above the water. I would try maybe a piece of PVC piping. If the bottom is sticky/soft, you might want to close up one end of the pipe, or better yet fab one end of it w/ 2 short legs that stick out in a Y shape, mine has that for soft bottom. The pointy end of mine can get stuck and has almost pulled me off the tower a few times.

Bassbones wrote:Go to BPS and get one for $40 or make one for less...Dont spend the money on a Loomis. It is not as light as you would expect and for the $$$ you almost hate to use it. If I had one that was cheaper I would use it alot more..
I'd have a hard time forking over the dough for a Loomis pushpole--I was just curious about having such a luxury item...

"Loomis" push pole. What is this world coming to. I should have made a living marketing in the fishing business. I would be rich by now. How much is that loomis push pole? Maybe 300 bucks? Is it made out of GLX graphite? All kidding aside you can easily make one from home depot. Just buy a painters pole that extends and fabricate a fitting that will work on one end. Something like a "y shape". Works great in the spring if you bed fish.

Yup, pushpoles and golf clubs are Loomis' other products. As for the price, you're only halfway there. Crazy, aint it? Click on the pic below...

Never thought I'd say I was happy to have double hernias. Now I won't have to worry over whether I should have bought a $650 GLoomis push pole.

The best idea I've seen is to go down to Leslie Pool supply and
by a pool brush pole, its made of extruded aluminum tubing and adjusts from 8'-16' and is easy to handle, durable and light.
probably no more than 50.00 bucks.

I have two telescoping push poles in my boat at all times

I bought them at the Hook while it was still at Big Break. I think they probably still carry them in stock

I have one that I made out of P.V.C..... I went to Home Depot and bought 2 in. p.v.c. pipe 1 "t" for the bottom with a cap on each side of the "t". I then bought 1 elbow and made a handle for it comming of the elbow. I then drilled holes at each end of the "t" and 2 holes in thr handle. This way water drains out as you use it and it also goes in the water easy for pushing your boat. I use mine for Havasu all the time in the grass. cost about $20.00
Time to make it ....less than 1 hour.

I have one of these, complete with the duck foot that I will sell for $25, but you gotta pick it up in Marysville. It will fit in the rod locker of a 20 foot boat. Light and strong, works great.
