Castaic -

Post by callwakeup »

fished Castaic today for the 1st time this year. For me the bite was moderate and all fish caught in 15 to 20' and the bait needed to be glued to the bottom with the slowest crawl.
I didnt see any fish up shallow and no signs of beds. My question -- did the spawn here already occur and the bulk is done - or did all this cold rain and new water push the spawn back and it hasn't really started yet?

Look at the last 2 tournaments, horrible results.
The water is now dropping for unknown reasons (making room for purchasing MWD water).
Lots of fry, the spawn may be over before lowering the water hopefully.

Did you even try topwater? I know they are done here at Casitas. It doesn't matter what the water temps are or what they do to the water. The fish didn't read the book. SoCal Reservoir fish are different from the northern part of the state cousins. I got plastered on topwater by the 3 pound fish however the bigger post spawned fish would only tap the bait close mouthed last week. I never caught any fish much over 3 pounds the whole spawn and yet I'm now seeing much bigger fish and they are obviously done( all head thin bodies) .The water temps plunged almost 5 degrees that week leading up to the May 5th full moon. With 90's only 3 days away I am going back out again tomorrow with like 16 rods tied up.... . It will take some time to figure out this year but so far I'm doing better than I thought. I guess it pays to be really old sometimes except my hands are hurting before I even launch...

When the water was still flowing into the back of creeks there was a “secret” frog bite going on the debris mats. Now that the jerks are lowering the lake during the spawn as they like to do, the frog bite may not be ongoing?

Sammy is one of my favorites. I had three topwater fish at Casitas yesterday in the first hour. I had zero fish after that for the day....Post spawn.
