10 pound delta largemouth would straighten the hook out on your jig and break your heart

Sound like them 10lb delta bass must be wild to bend a hook like that much more than the 12.9 I caught out of Eastman on a 1/4oz. bullet head light wire hook jig on a 6'6" med heavy spinning outfit spooled with 8lb maxima in 22 feet of water back
march of 2012. I've never had any issues with big bass bending hooks on my jigs so I've never came across that problem. But then again I don't need braided line to catch big bass I'll stick with 4,6,8,10 maxima good luck with your delta bass

That’s a great catch on light line
I’m a big fan of light line fishing
Don Iovino is the master !
however living near dirty shallow water also has an influence
I too have caught 10 plus bass on 8 and 10 pound green maxima in clean water reservoirs
Not on jig though Plastics
My personal best is 14.88 flipping a 3/4 oz jig in 3 feet of water Ca Delta
65 pound braid 24 inches of 15 pound green maxima joined with a crazy Alberto knot
For me I looked into the mouth of that giant bass with the 3/4 oz jig in it and
That heavy wire 4/0 heavy wire looked tiny in her mouth!!!!
Right at that moment I realized any thoughts of that 3/4 jig trailed with phantom craw uncle josh giant pork trailer being too big was out of the question !
I now have no concern flipping a 6/0 heavy wire jig. Atleast a 5/0
Now I’m talking dirty shallow water around and in heavy cover

Out on the mother lode lakes you will see me with 1/4 oz finesse jigs on spinning reels and light line
I have been trying to get comfortable with floral carbon but just can’t seem to like it much. I will use it in ultra clear water but then again. The breaking strength of green maxima is so high that I went back to 6 pound max where I was using 8 pound flouro and so on

What do you clear water experts say?

I've only been building jigs and other custom baits for 46 years now. I don't have any idea what I doing. But I sure know one thing i have built and sold a lot of lures in 46 years and made a good living doing it even as a hobby. Jig fishing is and art and doing it all these years I've learned a lot by not reading magazines but by going out and fishing. Seasonal bass structure fishing rocks wood isolated structure flats fishing or fishing schooling and suspended bass. Learn by being on the water. One of my best students is my wife she is very good at fishing a jig in a depth as deep as 50 feet of water. She has a lot of patience and she understands how to fish the different types of jig heads and colors of jigs she going to tie on. And in all types of structure were going to be fishing that day.

Cooch had Iovino make him a similar color darker green back.
Bass anglers tend to use hooks with wire the size used on frog hooks and strong enough for 300 lb tuna.
The larger the hook wire the more force needed to penetrate passed the hook barb. Once a hook has penetrated passed the barb to pulling force by the fish is in the hook bend, it’s not going to straighten fighting a bass. Anglers bend hooks by trying to pull out a snag that has only the hook point penetrated or removing a hook by pounding on it imo.
I used 5/0 jig hooks with .047D and .053D diameter forged bends (Gamakatsu 114 # 604) for decades without bending them on over 100 DD LMB,5 between 17lbs to 19 lbs. Lefty’s Jig hooks are strong enough for Delta bass imo.

WRB you can't tell these delta guys anything they know it all with there heavy braid there big heavy flipping hooks and the types of poles they use. I've been building mustad black nickel light wire hook jigs for the delta for better than 25 years now I can't ever remember a customer ever telling me the hooks failed on my jigs. I might build 300 flipping jigs a year compared to 4500 to 5000 light wire jigs a year. Ill just keep doing what I do best in building jigs that catch fish not fisherman.

So head up to the Delta and make a million with your puffy light wire hook jigs. Should be easy for a guy with your resume. Those Delta bass have never seen magic like yours. They’ll be powerless to your trickery.

Gann’s makes a good jig
Jiggin makes a good one too I’m sure
He has somthing against the delta so it seems
I’m just saying dirty water heavy cover I prefer a heavy wire hook. Shorter Shank to get the point farther up the weed guard where the fiber guard is a bit stiffer
This way I’m not bending hooks back into shape after every hang up on a tree limb rock stomp or other cover
All it needs is a few runs down the ole hook stone to put a good point back on
It. I don’t like a dull jig
Or loosing a bass to a skinny wire

Ever feel the roof of a basses mouth?
It’s hard as concrete. I prefer a flippin stick to drive that hook home

It could. Be different for different people

For a tournament angler a fish in the teens during a professional tournament
How many shots does a guy get at that?

For the rest of us you might say the biggest fish in the water you fish
A lake record

Certainly for all of us it’s the biggest fish we hook up with in our life time

JV that still doesn't explain why you need big heavy flipping jig hooks on the delta. 95% of the bass you catch there are average bass there not heavy weights it's the same as on a lake and reservoir that you fish.

JV wait I think I may have the answer. It's a mental thing with you. Big heavy flipping jig Your scared of loosing a fish of a lifetime. I'm just the average light wire hook jig fisherman I don't go looking for a fish of a life time. But I'll get over it.

It’s not a mental thing.
It’s called adjusting to the conditions
Have and use a variety of lures lines and rods from ultra light to flippin
First you need to get the bite then worry about landing. With that said I will use the heaviest gear the conditions allow.

I suppose you would use your light wire jig for everything from smallmouth bass to heavy cover bass in clear lake
You can do that Just need a soft rod some stretch in that line and patience.
I understand that from 30 years of fly fishing steelhead .
ever pick up a fly rod?

But hey I don’t know anything.
I’m finished with your nonsense

Just depends on test line to use. Nothing like tossing a 1/2oz or 3/4oz Arkie head jig on either 8 or 10 lb test In the middle of a brush pile or willow trees and have the bass jump on it.

I prefer both silicone and fine round rubber skirting material for dead sticking depending on with season it is I like mixing the skirting materials together. Vertical dead sticking is my favorite for winter time fishing. You can pick isolated structure out and there always fish around. Just have patience when doing this type of fishing. The viper head jigs WRB made up for me are going to work very good for this type of fishing this winter. I'm a big fan of Yamamoto twin tail grubs In both 4" double tails and 5" single and double tails grubs.
If you want heavy wire jigs there are several places that carry thoughts types of jig head try Lurepartsonline.com or Fishingskirts.com they have several type of jig heads for heavy cover fishing with heavy hooks and weed guards.

I been pouring painting and tying my own for 25 years or more. I’m not As good as you however. I just don’t make enough time. My jigs are rubber highlighted with silicone. I’m just now learning about filter beds. I am pretty good at tying as I also tie trout flies witch are tiny so bass jigs not so hard. I don’t know all the different methods however

JV do you tie your skirts on with weed guards glued in place. Do you tie them with the jig head up with weed guards up or jig head turn down. I glue all my weed guards in place after powder coating and firing the jig heads and tie all my jigs with weed guards up it make a different how the skirting material flares
