Yak-a-Bass held its team tournament at Camanche Lake. The weather was perfect for hunting and terrible for fishing. It rained on and off throughout the day with winds pushing 20 mph and gusts to 30 mph. Lake Camanche can fish tough, add wind and rain, the conditions can be brutal as proven by 85 anglers that signed up for the team event. Each team comprised of 5 anglers; each angler was only able to submit one fish for their team. It can appear to be easy just to catch one fish, but at Camanche add the conditions, obviously demonstrated to be challenging. The top 8 teams all submitted 3 fish each, not any one team was able to submit a 5 fish limit. A total of 53 fish were submitted during the event with only 37 anglers that submitted fish.

The team “Live Scope Sucks” wins with a total of 47.50”. This triumphant team consisted of AJ Ramirez, James Wardell, Jesus Reyes, Chris Starkey and Vinny Dau. Jesus Reyes, one of the Live Scope Sucks team members had the big fish of the tournament a 20.50” largemouth bass that weighed around 5 lbs. Ramirez stated that he did use live scope to catch his fish, kind of ironic. Ramirez mentioned at the awards that he caught his fish on a drop-shot MMIII Robo worm. Jesus Reyes caught his big fish on a Texas rigged Senko in green pumpkin.

After the tournament, Yak-a-Bass held its end of the year potluck, Angler of the Year awards combined with the Tournament of Champion and the team event. At the banquet and awards ceremony, Yak-a-Bass also had a raffle with many amazing prizes donated by many generous sponsors. Two of the grand prizes were two Newport NK-300 motors that included a battery were donated by Romel Labrador. The grand prize was a PDL 120 that was donated by Old Town Fishing. Shaun Leytem and Joshua Bryant won a NK-300 each and Morgan Swisher won the grand prize a new PDL 120 kayak. YakAttack, NRS, BerleyPro, Aqua Bound, Old Town Kayaks and Newport are just a few name brand items that were donated. The food, prizes and company are always outstanding at this event. All the proceeds collected during this event were donated to the San Joaquin Bassmaster’s youth.

If you have not competed in the team event with Yak-a-Bass at Camanche Lake, next year sign up and bring a dish for the potluck. The kayak community is the greatest group of anglers, and the camaraderie is without exception the best. A big shout out to everyone that elaborated to make this event happen. See you next year.
