Successfully registered my Kayak at the DMV.

Post by Backlash Black Belt »

there really is just a couple "rules of engagement"

Be Prepared and honest.
Be polite and patient.

I read a bunch of online horror stories. trust me when I say, my hands were sweaty walking into the DMV. my good friend paid $400 to register his Hobie ProAngler. he had to go back and forth 3x. he got double charged tax. hahah. I read stories of people saying they haven't bought their motors yet trying not to add registration cost to the final bill, etc. I bought my kayak new, so there was no hiding what I paid. add bill of sale if you got the kayak used.

you need:
Kayak Reciept showing you paid tax.
Motor Receipt showing you paid tax.
Manufacturers Statement of origin.
and some form filled out. in CA, it is form 101 or something for vessel registration. I filled it out at home before I got to the DMV. I left the parts that I had questions blank. there are lots of ambiguous things to answer. like first time out on the water. with the motor, or without? it is a quagmire of ???marks for me.

My DMV lady was (equally) clueless. she admitted I was her first watercraft registration. took about 30 minutes of her running back asking question, apologizing to me, starting over on her computer to get it done, but I smiled and waited the whole time. at the end, paid a tiny fee, thanked her, wished her a happy new year and a day of nothing but car registrations and I skipped out of there. mission accomplished.

glad that is in the rearview mirror!! and I got my Mussel sticker!!
