Clear lake question
At what Rumsey level do they close the lake to boat traffic?

Re: Clear lake question
There’s a myriad of variables but the closer it gets to 9 to 9.5 the closer it gets. Usually a no wake rule 1st. Historically March is the month…..Dan

There is a lot of property which surrounds Clearlake, some of those property’s were built with full pool(7.56 rumsey) in mind. One of the major reasons they would restrict recreational boat traffic is due to those wakes actually breaching people homes/properties.
Based on the picture I posted when lake reaches 8.0 (as of this moment it is 8.04) it goes into what’s called “food action stage”
At 9.0 it goes into “minor” flood stage.

Re: Clear lake question
First as said by Dan. the no wake rule is applied and a lake closure because of flood concerns . I have seen too many times flooding occuring to homes in Corinthian Bay, Lands End, Holiday thru Lakeport lakeside homes and most all ramps. Just as an example, so many homes and near lake businesses are effected north to south.

Re: Clear lake question
I'll be up there this Friday for 10 days and I just wondered about the numbers that they used for opening up the gates and so forth ...It appears they were dumping it as fast as they could just prior to this last set of storms.
I used to live there and we had a pier with the main dock on it and our boat slips attached by ramps from the pier so when back in the middle 70's it started flooding I had to un pin the ramps from the pier as the docks were now getting so high that they were in danger of getting sheared off by the rising floating docks we had. Then I had to pull every other board out of the pier to keep the wave action from pounding the pilings from below and driving the pilings out of the muck for a lake bottom they were driven into maybe 20 years prior to our owning the place. If your familiar with Glenhaven the resort is now a B & B called Sea Breeze which I understand to be an excellent place with some very high quality service. We always had the best crappie fishing around off that pier and it's still high on the list.
Pre-spawn here I come!!!!!!!!!!!

Boaters Take Care: Reduced Boating Speed Enforced When Operating a Motor Boat Within One-Quarter Mile of Shore While Lake Levels are High in Clear Lake
An Urgent and Important Joint Message from Lake County Water Resources Department, Lakebed Management, and Lake County Sheriff's Office, Marine Patrol. Please note, questions regarding this release can be directed to the Water Resources Department, Lakebed Management, at water.resources@lakecountyca.gov or (707) 263-2344.
LAKE COUNTY, CA (February 21, 2024) – Due to increasing lake levels in Clear Lake, motorboat users are reminded of local recreation Ordinance 3065, which requires idle speed when boating within one-quarter mile or less from the shore of Clear Lake. “Idle speed” means operating a motorboat at a speed that does not produce a wake, protecting shoreline property and infrastructure from harmful wave action.
This Ordinance goes into effect when the lake reaches 8.0 feet or higher on the Rumsey scale for a twenty-four (24) hour period. The requirements are lifted when Clear Lake drops to 7.9 feet Rumsey, or lower, for a 24 hour period.
Violating this Ordinance constitutes a misdemeanor and may result in a fine not to exceed $500, or up to six months imprisonment in the County Jail.
Please Continue to Exercise Caution Due to Floating and Submerged Debris
Additionally, all boaters are advised to use extra caution when operating motorboats throughout Clear Lake due to floating and submerged debris hazards resulting from the ongoing Atmospheric River storm events that have occurred in late January and February.
Floating and submerged debris such as trees, branches, full or partial floating docks, abandoned or detached boats, trash, and other objects can cause significant damage, particularly when coming into contact with boats operating at normal to significant speed. Boaters should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings and maintain a safe, slower speed when boating throughout all of Clear Lake this time of year.
For questions regarding this topic, or to report in-lake hazards such as debris, floating docks, or missing or found hazard buoys, please contact the Water Resources Department at (707) 263-2344 or email at water.resources@lakecountyca.gov.
