Teener Alert 13.20 DQ'd

Post by WB Staff »

Hometown Lunker! Danny Howard caught Legacy Class ShareLunker 658 in Lake Athens, just across the road from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center - Texas Parks and Wildlife home of the Toyota ShareLunker Program. Danny’s catch weighed in at 13.20 pounds. Congratulations, Danny and thank you for your contribution to bass conservation in Texas.

NOTICE FROM: Texas Parks and Wildlife

Unfortunately, we must share that the 13.2-pound Largemouth Bass caught from Lake Athens and submitted on February 19, 2024, was not a legal catch. Therefore, that fish has officially been removed from the Toyota ShareLunker Program and we await a new SL#658 to be submitted. Shortly following submission of the fish angler Danny Howard realized and communicated to us that his fishing license expired just a few days before he caught the bass. Mistakes happen. Unfortunately, this mistake made his fish illegal and ineligible for the program. We appreciate Mr. Howard’s forthright action in bringing this to our attention. We encourage all anglers planning to hit the waters in hopes of submitting a lunker bass to the Toyota ShareLunker Program to take a moment, find your fishing license, and check the expiration date. Fishing license dollars fund much of the important efforts required to develop, maintain, and enhance the great fisheries resources of Texas for current and future generations.

That’s a real bummer - a guy catches a giant and looks to donate the fish’s genes for the good of the sport, but they dq him and his bass? Wow.

So the Lunker bass program excepted the bass without a current ID and a valid fishing license a phone number and address. How did that happen they don't have a form to fill out before hand. He had to informed them his license
was expired. That's got to hurt just a tad. I think both party's were at fault.

Why would a license change the need for the gene collection?

That is rather strange. I go to Texas and fish every year and purchase a yearly license. Their yearly license dates are from August to August, for both resident and non resident anglers. If you purchased a short term license you would think that you would know what day your expired.
