Gel-coat yellowing question??

Post by DL »

What is the best way to remove some mild yellowing from my boat? Is it best to wet-sand and polish? use a rubbing compound? or take it to a glass shop and have them do it? I removed it once with Mequire's, but it has since come back with a vengeance...

DL, wet sanding with fine grit will remove the yellowed layer, but the problem with a lot of boats is that the original gel may be too thin over the flake portions of the boat.

Nitros and others use a large flake for their color sections and the odd flake can be felt as you wipe your hand across the deck. Sanding these sections can cause these flakes to chip and look like junk. Is the area straight white gel coat? If so, a light wet sand followed by a buff polish and wax will help.

If you quit drinking so much soda and having to go to the bathroom while on the water you would not have this yellow color on the gel coat.
Terry has told me that he is always cleaning yellow stains from the side of the boat.

DL, I don't know if you remember how yellow my boat was, but it was bad. I spoke with several boat repair places, and they told me I needed to wet sand it, and was quoted roughly $1000.00. As cheap as I am, I decided to just try a hull cleaner for $17.00 ( allbright? hull cleaner from boaters world). It was amazing, You just spray it on, and rince it off in 3 min.. I swear, it was that eazy. No rubbing or scrubbing (120 min. for the whole boat. I did it right before Alamo in march, and it still looks great. OK, it looks pretty good , but at least its white.

If you have a newer boat which isn't yellowed yet, or if you have recently wet sanded it, try using the NoSweatMist boat products as these have a UV inhibitor in them which helps keep the suns harmful UV light off your gel coat. You use sunscreen on your body right? Think of the NoSweatMist products as detailing products AND sunscreen for your boat. Save that investment!

I've been researching all of these products online. The consensus is that 'Poliglow' outlasts all the others by a large margin.

To get it at the best price on the web I could find too here is a link:

My '87 Skeeter is going to get a coating soon, you can imagine how nice it be when it looks semi-new again.

All I need to get into the money would be the four I usually get along with a 20# kicker.

The heavy water spot remover / color restorer is jel-based and really, really works. Anglers Marine has it..
