The West Coast Championship (WCC)is the largest kayak tournament held on the West Coast. Anglers qualified through specific events held in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming and California. The field was stacked with all the best kayak anglers, they were ready for two days of competition on the famous Clear Lake. Clear Lake did not disappoint the anglers with several anglers hitting the century mark pushing their best 5 fish limit over 100”. On day one of the event 90” put you in 39th place and the top ten took 95.50”. At 95.50”, there were 5 anglers that had the exact inches but the angler with the largest fish pushed to the top ten. The two-day tournament for the WCC 6 anglers had over 100”. Obviously, Clear Lake was fishing at its potential.
Once the lines were in and all the fish were submitted to TourneyX Web site. Caymen Rasmussen wins for the second time with a total of 202.50”. Rasmussen’s day-one total was 101.75” good enough for a third-place finish and then on day-two, his 100.75” again was good enough for a third-place finish. However, Rasmussen's two-day total of 202.50” was good enough for a win. Rasmussen unitized a variety of crankbaits to entice his two limits. Early each day he would fish shallow with a square billed crankbait and then move out to deeper water with a deeper running crankbait.

“Day-one, I didn’t start off like I thought I thought things would go.” stating Rasmussen, “I started on an off shore rock pile without a bite for the first half hour.”
“I moved to a shallow rock pile and started to catch fish; this rock pile was the area I would fish the next two days during the tournament.” declared Rasmussen, “I caught 90% of my fish during the three days on a Lucky Craft square bill crankbait.”
“I did catch a few fish on a Jack Hammer chatter bait and an underspin during the competition days.” proclaimed Rasmussen, “I did move back out to the deeper rock piles to follow the fish moving out towards deeper water as the day progressed.”

“The rock pile was in 20-feet of water, I used a deep crankbait to catch my largest bass for the weekend that measured in at 22”.” announced Rasmussen, “It was a pretty cool bite, half way back to the boat, I felt a tick, once I got my crankbait near the boat, I stopped it and the fish slackline my bait.”
“The wind blew 10 to 15 miles per hour all day long which made fishing extremely difficult to fish effectively.” reported Rasmussen, “I was able to catch a fish with the Hover rig by casting past the fish and letting the bait hover past the fish. It seemed like forever, but the fish ate my bait within a few seconds once the fish started to tail my bait.”
“On day two, I knew where I was going to start fishing, the exact rock pile that was magical the day before.” publicized Rasmussen, “There was some brush and a rock pile near the shore. The fish were pushing the bait up to the edge of the rock pile.”
“My first fish was a 20” fish and then on my second cast, I caught my largest fish of day two a 22” fish." notified Rasmussen, “I switched to an underspin and caught my second 20”.”
“I filled out a limit for a mid to high 90’s the first hour and a half.” informed Rasmussen, “Once the bite shut down, I moved around to find another rock pile that held fish and picked up another 18” fish to push my total inches over 100”. “
“Early the key was to fish shallow, less than 5-feet of water and then in the afternoon, the key was to fish as deep as 20-feet of water.” advised Rasmussen, “I used the square bill to fish shallow and the deep diver to fish in deeper water.”
“I stayed in the area in hopes to upgrade my total inches for day-two.” guided Rasmussen.”
Rasmussen thanked Enduro Power Batteries, Six Gill Fishing Products, and BA Custom Baits.
Anthony Garcia was runner up with a total of 200.50” with a day-one total of 102.25” and a day-two total of 98.25”. Garcia used a swimbait and a jig to catch his two limits of bass. He fished the same location on both days where he had found a mega school of bass pushing bait up onto a flat.
“I was able to get off work and practice for about an hour. During this time, I caught two 6-pounders in a very short time.” directed Garcia, “I relaunched in the South end of the lake where I didn’t find the quality size of fish that I figured would take to win this event.”

“On day one of the tournament, I launched on the North end of the lake where I had found the mega school of fish.” stipulated Garcia, “It was insane, the first hour I caught over 100” of bass off that one area.”
“During the tournament, I needed to cull up an 18” fish even though I had caught several fish in the18” range.” specificized Garcia, “I left those fish so I wouldn’t beat them up too badly. I did catch some fish off some shade under docks that helped me cull up.”

“Day two, I was hoping that I didn’t beat up those fish too badly and started there on the mega school of fish that I had caught my day-one fish.” spoken Garcia, “It was insane how many fish I caught off that area. I caught around 95” off that spot pretty fast.” vocalized Garcia, “There were only a few anglers there where I had caught my fish on day-one and they gave me that area, which was really cool of those anglers.”
“On day-two, I hammered on everything that bit, I didn’t want to leave any fish for Sunday since I knew I was not going to fish the Chris Laird event.” declared Garcia, “I caught all my fish on day-two on a jig and never got a bite on the glide bait.” proclaimed Garcia, “I was fishing isolated tule patches to catch my fish.”

Garcia thanked his girlfriend, family, amazing sponsors and friends for all their support.
Jason McClure finished in third with 198.50” with a day-one total of 103.00” and a day-two total of 95.50”. McClure had the largest day of 103.00” for the West Coast Championship between the two-day event. I was not able to interview Jason McClure and hope to be able to interview him in the near future so we can find out the juice to allure a 103.00” bag at Clear Lake.
