OROVILLE, Calif. – A current Oroville heat advisory for the expected 100 to 109 degree air temps is scheduled to lift within the next day and forecasted temperatures are slated to dip into the mid-80s for the blast off of the next Bass Boat Technologies televised BAM Pro Tour stop at the Thermalito Afterbay presented by the Oroville Chamber of Commerce and the Gold Country Casino.

The three-day event, launching on September 20 will be the 4th and final regular season event available to the Pro Tour anglers for qualification in the 2024 Tournament of Champions (TOC), set to take place on the tidal waters of the California Delta later this year.

With the imposed 30 day off-limits and the extreme temperature swing at the Oroville fishery, anglers may find themselves challenged by the less commonly fished body of water. A previous visit to the venue gave Pro Tour angler Billy Hines of Vacaville, Calif. some insight in the multi-species habitat called an Angler’s Haven.

“I caught fish all kinds of ways – flippin’, pitchin’, punchin’ – fishing tules; but then I caught some offshore too, so I think we will be able to catch ‘em anyway we want,” shared Hines. “It will be about what YOU like to do AND which areas don’t have six boats on them.”

Tules were a focus for Hines. “I could catch several fish off a patch; but then I cold go to the next one and not catch one; so, it is going to depend on who lands on the patch where they are biting and who is going to have to look a little harder,” he shared.

He expects the fluctuating water levels to challenge the bite. “It kind of reminded me of the Delta, because of the high and low water that can change by feet,” he shared. “Because of that sometimes you can get under the causeway and sometimes you cannot, and the grass can be up above or below the surface level. That will affect when the Forward facing, or the frogs will work better.

“And because they are letting in water and dropping water, there is current ripping through there. It makes it fish different – not exactly like the Delta, but not like a lake either. It has the challenges of both.”
