Things are cyclical. The Dems were in control for 8 years and 12 of the last 16 and now things have shifted. If the economy doesn't improve the dems will be back in power in 2028. Contrary to what the two sides like to assume, who's in power has very little to do with each party's core political views. People don't vote on issues such as abortion and gun rights. Most voters (especially the independents) vote their pocketbooks and since the economy is cyclical it's very hard for one party to stay in power more than a few terms in a row. Perfect example is abortion. Polls show that the majority of the public is pro choice and the vast majority of women are very pro choice. However, the majority of white women voted for Trump in both elections he won. If women really voted on the basis of reproductive rights no Republican would ever win the presidency, but they don't. They vote their pocketbooks. Simple as that.
