Golden Mussel found at Oroville
Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
I have a question on all of this Golden Mussel BS. Haven't the lakes in SoCal been infected with the Zebra mussels? I know Havasu is. What millions of dollars have they spent on clogged pipes, damaged infrastructure? I'm not seeing or hearing anything about those issues, but I don't live around that area. On our way back from Havasu the state inspection station just wanted to see our plugs removed from the boats; they didn't check the hull or live wells.
I believe that this is just another scare tactic to reduce our rights. It is funny that all the lakes that have found golden mussels on boats have the same story. Hmmm? It would more credible news if they showed the mussels actually attached to the boat in question than showing adult mussels on a petri dish, at least for me it would. And wouldn't the person who is taking said vessel by able to see said mussels, stop and say, "hey maybe I should clean this boat off at a carwash or something, before I take to be inspected?" Seems awful suspect to me.

Obviously this is a huge deal (in this world). However, most people I talk with aren’t even aware of the situation. That includes boat owners. People go to launch at the ramps and get sent to an inspection site. When I was going through the (free) inspection, the people around me looked like those you might see at a county fair or the DMV. Personally I don’t think it’s crazy that out of the thousands of boats inspected less than one percent have, in fact, had the mussel on them.

Have the Quagga Mussels overwhelmed our water infrastructure? If not, why would the Golden Mussel be any worse?

I'm not certain the Golden Mussel will be any worse. But there is a chance it could be. I would love to be wrong.mark poulson wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 2:33 pm Have the Quagga Mussels overwhelmed our water infrastructure? If not, why would the Golden Mussel be any worse?
We are talking about different species here, so of course there are going to be differences that can lead to variences in the ability to spread in California. Look at how small genetic adaptations (in evolution) can impact populations over time. Or look at how the invasive plant French broom has found more success in California vis-a-vis the invsasive plant Scotch broom.
With regard to the mussel:
https://www.nps.gov/whis/learn/nature/nonnatives.htm
"the primary difference between golden mussels and other aquatic invasive species (such as quagga/zebra mussels) is the golden mussel's ability to tolerate a wider range of ecological conditions, namely very low calcium levels as well as having the ability to tolerate brackish waters. This is an immediate threat locally as all indicators point to this species being able to readily colonize Whiskeytown and other north state reservoirs if introduced."
Hey, I would love to be wrong. Time will tell...

Isn’t this a lot like carp? I recall in 1980s how the carp reproduces a million to one black bass
How it was going to ruin all our lakes a streams
How did the invasive carp get into all our waters?
Was it transported by recreational boating?
Just another scar that will pass. In ten years are we going to wonder how the lakes and delta are not entirely infested ?

All the while the foreign ships that brought it here continue to roll into port and dump their infested ballast tanks…. You think CDFW has a fish cop down at the dock doing inspections and decontamination on these foreigners before they come into our waters?
The ships are big and I could have missed it but, I’ve failed to see one with a “mussel sticker” on the side

Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
Good point. It’s a joke
They know the mussel comes from over seas but did nothing to protect the Delta from it
They say it might be possible to move it in a couple drops of water from your outboard so we must impose regulations and restrictions.
Yet the ships are still using the Stockton port?
What about using different ports

Look at you, you're judging people and you don't even realize it you good little liberal democrat that you are. Are you talking about Mexican's, Red Necks, or just people that you perceive that have a lower IQ than you? I'm betting your job is funded by tax payers whether directly or indirectly as in "prevailing wage". As long as the state or the unions are getting a cut of your pay its all the same you're sucking off the tax payers teet. You're pretty much worthless to me. Sorry if that hurts your feelings but NOT.Kennortonjr wrote: ↑Fri Jun 06, 2025 2:26 pm When I was going through the (free) inspection, the people around me looked like those you might see at a county fair or the DMV. Free inspections......lol.....My buddy just told me he had to pay $80 bucks to launch at Melones when the gubberment said it was always going to be FREE. Go check yourself.

“Have you been to the DMV? It’s a leper colony down there.” A line from Seinfeld was my inspiration. Wait, is comedy banned now? Trying to remember. So I guess it was none of the groups you mentioned, but lepers. In reality it was a straightforward observation, sorry if you need things sugar-coated.
It cracks me up how so many of you have this hard-fast image of what a Democrat must be like. It shows you don’t interact with a lot of people. Social scientists say this is indicative of the loss of a “third place” - making friends with all types of people at clubs, teams, churches, etc. I have lots of conservative friends and am able to assume the best in you guys. You just see blue hair and this totally made-up caricature. Too much conservative media makes you this angry. If we met in real life I promise you would like me.
So, I have been pointing out in these threads that Federal lakes are the ones with the strict restrictions. New Melones is a Federal lake. Write to Trump with your complaint.
Let’s try to stick to fishing (adjacent) talk please!

So you are miss informed
Camanche no 2025 boating season
Pardee No 2025 boating season
Tulloch. No 2025 boating season
Woodward. No 2025 boating season
New Melones dam
Free recreation was integrated into New Melones’ mission from early officially in the 1962 amendment. Many activities remain free or low-cost to the public, though some facilities charge nominal fees for upkeep. The Visitor Center, hikes, and basic day-use access continue to be available at no cost.
Boating was free
The Recreation Enhancement Act of 2005 allowed fee collection at places like Glory Hole and Tuttletown Visitor areas but revenue is reinvested onsite . Always some Ca bologna to take away the last free boat Ramps.
Take a little bit away until nothing is left
That’s the democrat way
The good little libtards justify their authoritarian actions with environmental scar tactics using anything that comes along to their advantage
There is a new mussel that might possibly be a problem. CLOSE the lakes. Restrict them best we can if full closure is going to meet too much opposition.
Take small steps to full closure over time
Oh look a virus. It’s bad for old folks. Blow it up out of proportion. The vast majority of the public are sheep. Certainly in CA
close everything. It’s our opportunity for a great deal of power. Tell everyone to stay home
Close the boat ramps too.
The climate is changing as it always has. We know it’s been warming since the last ice age and as a result more life on earth than ever before
Ban gasoline. We can control sheep. They believe everything.
As an eager initiate Kenny proudly gave up his pass time
These things are happening before our eyes
No denial ? Agree with it or not more and more regulation restrictions tax and authoritarian rule is slowly being implemented
Some very bad people are justifying it

Ken Norton.... I would probably like you but you're as dumb as any conservative on here that watches FOX news exclusively. You're all part of the system and don't even realize it. I tossed my Trump flag in the trash a month or so ago. You can have him. He's compromised just like every POS president we've had the last 200 years and if they weren't compromised they were killed. You make a very good attempt at making your posts appear that you have a high IQ and you're sensible but pleeeze. Give it up and get that liberal hook that snagged you out of your back. You're not fooling me. You're all "part of the system" and are being played. You side with the government and whatever the news feeds you.
Can you agree with me that the boats they found Mussels on are very suspect? A 65 footer going to TAHOE. LOL...Every photo of mussels being in a petri dish. After all nothing was found 100 years prior. Seems very convenient to me. Think of agendas like the TUNNELS and stealing water from the North to send to the South. "F" the fish, "F" the environment, and "F" our quality of life in the North. The South and the Farmers want all the water and the hell with everything else. It's all about $$$$$$$$$

Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
I can agree that the way they release the information makes it seem suspect. But for that I blame the poor state of local media. In the 90s when we had a lot more independent nor-Cal newspapers, we would all have a lot more insight and specific details with regard to a situation like this. Arguments like this would play out in the “letters to the editor” and they would put a reporter on it. A few companies have consolidated (and put out of business) most of the independent media and a lot of these stories now turn into what I would consider “slop”.Whoopbass wrote: ↑Mon Jun 09, 2025 5:03 pm Ken Norton.... Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
Yep at the Forebay. It’s free, you go through the entrance and then take a left. Make sure your boat is dry and when you lower the motor it doesn’t drip. I don’t think they have inspections at any of the launch ramps - just at the Forebay.
Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
What do they do? I mean whats to stop someone from bypassing the inspection and launching at the ramp? Not everyone even knows to get an inspection
Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
I am sure they have a method of checking boats to make sure they have been inspected but I don't know what that procedure is. But, you should be aware that they don't start the inspections at the Forebay until 8:30 AM. And if there are boats ahead of you, who knows how long it will take and then add the drive time to the ramp of your preference and any "morning" fishing is long past.
Fish bite twice a day - half hour before I get there and half hour after I leave.

Re: Golden Mussel found at Oroville
They have workers at all the launch ramps during daytime hours (until 10). The initial inspection puts a wire with your inspection number around the bow stop that connects to the trailer. The workers at the launch ramp take this off when you launch and put a new one on when you leave.
