I've never used a Chatterbait-like lure before this year. Fortunately, I found a Micro Chatterbait on the ground near the boat launch but it sat unused in my tackle box for a month. Finally I decided to give it a try but replace the skirt with a Kut Tail worm:
First cast, the bass in the photo napping on a shallow flat in open water. Hit the pads and more bass hit. The first thing I noticed was the vibration imparted to the worm by the blade's side-to-side vibration.
The next day for the H of it I reattached the skirt but cut it shorter. I cast to some pads in my pond and could see the wake of a bass swimming toward it. BAM! fish on! So I tried it again on the lake I first caught the bass and sure enough, I caught a 2 lb bass
...followed by a 1.5 lb bass in the pads! It avoided hangups pretty good.
There are many plastic worms that would work well but none that I would use that have a curl tail. Other than the Micro Chatterbait I caught bass on, the Beetle Spin got my attention on a different forum.
So, I made my own and attached a 4" worm. Everything hit it!
