Yak a Bass held a team tournament at the California Delta. As always, the Delta did not disappoint a few anglers and showed that the big fish were biting when the tide was right. The Delta has over 1000 miles of fishable water with several launch ramps available to the kayak anglers. The key to doing well at the Delta is launching at the ramp that has fish willing to bite, available bait, cover, tide movement and anglers adapting to the changing tide. Alden Walden found the low tide was the best for the frog bite while the punch bite only produced smaller fish. Walden targeted small pockets of cheese to entice his nice limit of 95.50” This is how he caught his fish.
“I have not fished the Delta since last July, so I just went out and fished some history.” stated Walden, “My third or fourth cast I caught a frog fish on a small cheese matt.”
“I found a punch bite along the berms with small cheese matts right up against the bank.” exclaimed Walden, “Those fish were between the 14-to-16-inch size.”
“I decided to make a long run to some other history areas.” remarked Walden, “I couldn't find any grass but there were small cheese matts and duck weed pockets in the area.”
“From 11 AM to 2 PM I ran into a sweet frog fish bite; it was a feeding window that opened up and I caught around 20 to 25 fish during that time.” mentioned Walden, “I had around 50 blow ups during that time. I had several huge fish miss my frog.”
“I would throw the frog so it would make a big splash and would see the fish wake. I would reel in and then cast over to the area where the bass waked.” declared Walden, “It was a great day with so many blow ups during that window.”
“I would work the frog slowly to get the fish to commit on the frog.” claimed Walden, “The biggest key was making the fish wake from the splash and then casting to that area and work the frog slowly either walking it or letting it sit.”
Alden Walden thanked James and Shaun for running these great events.
The Lone Rangers (Jesse Hoover and Joey Silva) came in second place with 92.75” Hoover used a jig to catch his big fish earlier in the morning.
“I caught a 23.00” bass on one of my hand tied jigs along a retaining wall first thing in the morning.” pronounced Hoover, “I use living rubber and silicone in brown, red, and Black with a Sweet Beaver as a trailer.”
“I caught a few fish on a chatter bait and punched a few fish on the Sweet Beaver.” insisted Hoover, “I punched cane islands on low tide when the cane would lay on the water.”
“During low tide the fish would move to the outer edge of the cane.” replied Hoover, “The Chatter bait was a Z-man green pumpkin. I would throw the Chatter bait on the outer edge of the weed line.
“As the tide dropped out, the Chatter Bait worked best.” said Hoover.
The team of Haynie and Patino came in third place with a total of 88.00” There was a three-way tie, but Haynie’s big fish that went 21.00” which broke the tie and pushed them to third place.
“Haynie caught their big fish early in the morning.” said Patino.
“I tossed the chatter bait around until around noon without a bite.” voiced Patino, “I changed up to a magnum speed worm and caught my first fish.”
“I only caught one fish on the speed worm, so I changed up to a Senko.” expressed Patino, “I Texas rigged the 6” Senko and caught several fish. I culled up to a 17” fish the last few minutes of the day.”
“If it wasn’t for Haynie’s big fish, we would have never came in third place.” explained Patino, “That one fish gave us the edge to push us up to third place.”
Patino thanked Headwaters Adventures, New Port and Bioenno Batteries. Haynie thanked Buck N Bass for all their support.
