Tow...Tow...Tow a boat up the River and a Legend returns WWN#11

Typical Wednesday routine, Gas Ice, and on Hwy 4 @ 9am. Something is wrong, as there is no traffic. Exit March Lane and as I'm waiting at the light, another boat comes off 5 and turns. Arriving at Ladd's we are boat 3 and 4. It's 9:30 in the morning, almost 5 hrs before take off. I'm thinkin, Geez! do I need to camp out? Oh well, have a nice conversation with John Fontain and prep the ranger, and join the Pow Wow. John forgot his chair so he borrows one from one of the other guys, while that guy is preparing his gear. Around 11 am a white truck pulling a19 ft Nitro pulls in and a grey haired gentleman comes walking over to the Pow Wow. There's something familiar about that face, I'm thinkin. He too has forgot a chair. The familiar smile and I know who this is, I say "Dave, I have a step stool in the truck if you'd like to use that as a seat. He accepts. As I gaze around the guys at the Pow Wow, it appears to me that nobody recognizes this gentleman. I could be mistaken, but as he strikes up a few conversations in the group, I wonder do these guys know who this is? This guy was written up in the Wall Street Journal, back in the late 60's or 70's, won at least 22 boats and major tournaments all over the Country. A Legend in our midst is non other than Dave Gliebe. Time has not been kind to the memories of these legends. I could have probably gone through the entire line and asked if they knew who Dave Gliebe was and the response would be who? Before you know it it was lunch time and the grill was loaded with hot dogs and a warm pot of homemade chili. It was nice chatting with the Legend.
While waiting for Gerry and Richard to show up I get a text from Stickbait informing me that on the WWN FB page there is a survey asking if they should change the time from 2:15 to 1:15 for the last 2 tournaments. Not sure I like that as the last hour can be magical. Will have to wait as Richard Dawson used to say "Survey Says" for results.
So stick shows up and loads the boat and away we go. We're headed to Franks. It's incoming and I'm on a fantastic dink bite.   Stick drops one about 2 1/2, and then nothing for the next hour. Off to spot 2, where again nothing but dinks happen. Ok, we decide to make a long run. As we're going down the river at around channel marker near Delta Yacht harbor 2 guys in a bayliner I think wave us down. I pull up and ask about there problem. They tell us the boat broke down and could we give them a tow. I'm trying to calculate the nearest launch ramp . I ask where'd you guys launch. They looked at each other eyes bulging with the expression where did we launch? They couldn't remember where they launched from, but they knew it was March Lane. So for the next 1 1/4 hours we tow them back to Ladd's. While towing, I pick up my Samsung and it's black WTH? How in the world did I use up all my battery? Wait! Its par for the course, it wouldn't be WWN if something didn't break, stop working, or anything else. Used Sticks phone to call the wifey and let her know there would be no calls when I'm headed home.(I do not carry any cords in the truck or boat   ) So back to towing, got them right to the dock with Sticks team work, I went on one side, Stick disembarked with tow rope in hand and eased them up on the other side of the dock. They thanked us and asked if we wanted some BEER!    . Not money, just beer. I rejected the offer and requested they pay it forward sometime.
So with an hour left, Stick and I fish the area. We only had 1 fish, but within minutes of going "Pops" we had 12 lbs with no time left. Dumped em.
Guess I'm saving up for that TOC money. :D

I had the pleasure of fishing with Dave a time or two. Seen him around Ladds a couple times recently. Glad to hear he showed up for a WWN. A legend indeed.

Dave was the one that got me into tournament Fishing. I went to a way in for West Coast Bass I believe in the early 90s. When Jerry Tilton won it with a seven pounder in the last couple minutes. He told me he had one 33 boats and two Cadillacs. Gave me the rundown on how to enter and not to be worried the pros will help you. I signed up the next tournament on Clearlake and Drew, Tony Francise. He won a year before. I had never seen anyone catch a fish on a frog, and after that I have been hooked for life.
