More than 60 dams across California are considered to be in poor condition, according to an analysis by the Hearst Television Data Team.

Of those dams, about 40 are also classified as high hazard or extremely high hazard, meaning that if they were to fail it would cause a significant loss of life and economic or environmental damage.

Dams that are used for Electrical Power Generation fall under the jurisdiction of FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ) that has their own strict inspection and record keeping criteria for dams separate from California .
