wiring for trolling motor

Post by polytheney »

Hey,

I have to replace my 24 volt trolling motor and found a 36V one that I can afford. Someone has told me that i can use my starting battery and wire it along with the two 24 volt trolling motor to make 36V's. Anyone have any experience with this?

What would be the problem except having to paddle or get towed in when you can't get the big motor started?

Better off getting a 36v lithium battery for the TM and not use the cranking / graph battery on the TM. Although you technically can do this, it is not advisable.

Bad idea
You will have voltage imbalance. The cranking battery will get charged from the outboard and have extra load when live wells are running plus the electronics.

It would work but batteries will not live long and who knows what other problems you might have……..
Your electronics for sure won’t like it too

Check out a Troll Bridge to do what you are wanting to do. They have a set up that will work.

I don’t think they have a bridge for 36 volt motor that works like you want. The 24 volt uses 2 batteries

However the 36 volts uses 4 batteries.
Both allow trolling motor batteries to be charge with the outboards ALT

What 36V TM are you getting? Some 36V TM will run on 24V setting.
Batteries in series should be the same mfr and age, cranking battery separate from the electronics. With lithium you need a charger for 36V marine battery.

Back when Yandina owned TrollBridge, they had a combiner that you could use the START battery as one of the Trolling Motor batteries. I see now that TrollBridge is no longer by Yandina and the new owners have eliminated that option, They also eliminated the Life Time Warranty too !!

When the 36 volt units first came out using the crank battery was the only way they could be used because very few boats at that time would hold more than 3 batteries in the back.

Just get 3 12v lithium batteries. Amazon has the LiPULS 100ah battery that through the bms, reads more power than they’re rated for. I have one for my power winch & jack, it always has plenty of power & very low drain. They’re really lightweight too. If I didn’t have lithium’s for my Ghost already, I’d buy these. They’re on sale right now for 179.95 each minus a 10% discount.
