I give Don Iovino credit to start using his tuned 2500C reeks, Phenix Doddle rod and 5 lb Maxima UG line with small finesse lures. Don made a good living with his finesse fishing. The finesse casting stayed underground for decades, spinning tackle became main stay for finesse bass fishing.
The problem with spinning reels is line twist and lack of accurate casting. Super small diameter braid help to resolve line twist but anglers still added Mono or FC leader requiring 2 knots.
Daiwa introduced their Pixie and Sol casting reels that accommodated small diameter 5 to 6 lb mono/FC but few casting rods.
Today the BFS is available by several Japanese rods and reel and domestic rods. If you haven’t tried BFS in lieu of spinning for finesse you missing out on the fun no line twist and accurate casting catching average size 2 to 3 lb bass.
