Delta Swans
Delta Swans
On Jan 1st the state has made it legal for hunters to murder as many swans as they want. I'm sure there will be no shortage of hunters that will have no problem trolling up to them and blowing their heads off since they have no fear of humans.
The state wants them gone. They cite the swans are bullies and they eat the vegetation that native birds eat but the state never mentions they kill off 90% of the grass in the delta that the native birds eat.

Re: Delta Swans
Maybe the State should think about taking care of the Golden Mussel project on the Delta before destroying the Delta Swans.

Swans are majestic birds you would think the bird people would be making an effort to protect them.

Gents-with all due respect, a couple of you don’t know what you’re talking about. Mute Swans are not migratory. They’re an invasive species. They’re former ornamental pets that were let go or escaped and have been reproducing at fast pace. They’re not even legal to possess in CA. And they say they’re harmful to the native populations. Tundra and trumpeter swans….the ones that migrate from locations way North to winter in continental US are still protected in CA
Re: Delta Swans
Who cares if they're not migratory. I think their pretty cool and admire how they defend their nest/chicks. I agree they have exploded in numbers the last 10 years so maybe there should be a hunt but to wipe them all out I don't agree with. They add a touch of class and elegance to the Dirty D.
These mute swans are not harmful to those other swans that you never see. Excuses just to wipe these birds out.

Re: Delta Swans
Never see Tundra swans? Open your eyes. Actually, any given day this time of year you’ll see hundreds or thousands of Tundra swans flying between the Delta islands. The Cal Delta one of their prime wintering grounds. Either you don’t fish the Delta or don’t know what you’re talking about.

Re: Delta Swans
forget about the Swans ! DFW needs to declare open season on Sea Lions! no limit ! take by any means! guns, bow & arrow, spear, rpg, boat propeller, etc.
Re: Delta Swans
Being knowledgeable in Swan species is not my strong point. To me a swan is a swan. I wonder how many of these protected swans are going to meet their demise since they all look pretty similar? You got a recipe for these mute swans Tony or are you just going to let them rot where they fall?TonyM wrote: ↑Sat Dec 06, 2025 7:31 pm Never see Tundra swans? Open your eyes. Re: Delta Swans
Other than the bodies both being white, there are very identifiable differences. Waterfowl hunters know how to ID species and sex. I may never shoot one since they’re not common yet in the areas I hunt. But if I hunted the Delta, I would kill as many as I could. But I’m done responding to someone who thinks the lawful removal of an invasive species is “murder,” because he thinks they’re cute.
