Folsom Craws

Post by Porkrind »

Has anyone seen red or blue crawdads at Folsom? I have only seen a few and so far they have only been brown/green pumpkin color.

I have seen fish spit up whole crawdads that were bright red on many occassions. I guess with most bodies of water they vary in color.

you will find them to be different colors depending on what type of habitat they are living in and also depending if they have molted yet. You can find some good info from an old article from Cooch on the site under cooch's jig fishing theory. I cant recall if he talks about folsom at all, but it is worth the read

Craws very per season and also per species. The one's you see that fish spit up are almost always red because of the stomach acid changing the shell color. The only way to see the true color is by going lakeside and turning rocks and also digging for them. The other way is to go into the grass and look for them by pulling up grass and sifting through.
The story Cooch wrote is an awesome read. He is 1 of the west coast masters of the jig. I hope to know half of what he does on the subject. I am still learning but I think I am well on my way to the promised land.

Folsom Craws the craws I have uncovered at Folsom have been molten Green with some orange. I like having Orange in my jig at Folsom they seem to eat it a bit better.

As Ray L said the only way to know the true color is by flipping over rocks and looking for some dads, and the exact colors will vary from one section of the lake to another depending on habitat color.
