Back from Havasu

Post by John Barron »

I went to Havasu this weekend to break in the new boat. I got there Saturday just before safe light and found the wind blowing and the water whitecapped. The Terrible Herbst flag was standing at full attention.

Because of my recent surgery I decided it would not be a smart thing for me to go bouncing around in that rough water. I must be getting old. I went and got a room and would try again on Sunday.

Sunday morning I get up to see no wind. I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I bounced in and out of the shower and headed for the launch ramp. I had to slow myself down. No matter how many new boats I’ve had this is my first new Ranger and was really looking forward to putting this boat on the water.

I was amazed at the hole shot this new 520 Ranger has even with all my gear and two tanks of gas. It is great handling and has a smooth ride. As the morning moved along and I got used to the boat I started playing with it more. When I opened it up the 225 Pro XS responded immediately with a lot of power.

I made a couple runs from the mouth of the river to Bill Williams and back again. From the river to Bill Williams is about 28 miles. That's why I like Havasu for breaking in a boat, it's just about an hour round trip. Your not going around in circles and when you go full throttle and full trim you don't run out of lake!

On my second trip coming back from Bill Williams the wind started up again and the water was starting to get a little rougher so I couldn’t hold it at full throttle for long but she handled the rougher water extremely well.

Going back to Windsor Beach the lake was white capped again but this boat was a lot smoother than I thought it was going to be going across the basin. I can see the difference even after only one day and I like it. It was a good trip. I did do a little fishing down near the High Power lines and caught come good fish. I got on a good bite and didn’t want to quit but I had to get off of the water and head home.

I do envy those of you fishing this coming weekend. I wish I could be there but I will most likely be at Naci racing up and down that lake chasing the spots or having some fun with the white bass. Good luck to all of you going to Havasu.

Congrats again on the new ride and glad you decided to play it safe and not reinjure yourself. Did you get your CF numbers yet? If not, I just ordered my AZ numbers from this place.

Nice looking stuff.

Hey John. Where were you? I left yesterday. fished 13 hours on sunday. Looked for you but did not catch a glimpse of your new ride. Lots of small fish. Just to let you guys know all the fish were upchucking shad after being caught. Also, some idiot went around all the motels (stayed at the super 8) and took all of the round plug adapters from all the vehicles. Had to go to Wally world and pick up a new one. good luck to all this weekend.

I called and left a message on your cell. I ran up and down the lake and fished near Bill Williams on Sunday. I didn't go out Saturday because of the white caps and just gedtting over surgery. I didn't want to break something.........not in the boat but in me.

That's great John, I'm really glad to hear the boat can catch fish ... at least one of you can catch them. Hopefully ones that won't be there the next time you go out.

Good to hear you up and around and I'm glad you like the new boat. You'll have to drag it up to Flaming Gorge and we'll go catch some smallmouth ... that is, the boat and me, we'll let you watch.

Congratulations my friend.

Did you say you were changing your name

To "Flaming George?

And I agree with you at least the boat can catch fish. God knows I have trouble even staying in the boat or even standing up let alone cast.

Be sure to call me when you get settled so I can harrass you some more. BTW BDO said to tell you hello next time I talked to you. Are you still in the house where I can call you?

Oh yeah, we haven't moved yet. We will be hitting the road on Saturday of Sunday, but, believe it or not, I have to go the hospital first. Damn ticker's acting up again. If it's not one thing it's another.

I really need to call BDO sometime.

You know, I was thinking, Ranger has some really nice multi-species boats that have nice, high sides on them, that might help keep you in the boat.

I have to stop giving you crap about that because I know how Karma works.
