How many boats need to be in a tournament before you need a permit. Say for example...10 guys get together to have a friendly tournament and they use 5 boats...do they need to get a permit from DFG?
Thanks Rod

Re: When do you need a permit for a tournament
I need a permit evertime... Is my wife going to "permit" me to go fishng this weekend...Nah. When me and my buddies do a paperweight tourny we all use the same type of scales. Bring the fish in weigh it write it down and then release it. Count the best 5.
Re: Here ya go Rod...
Hey Ron how come you not fishing today???? Where can I find lake limits for a "live" weigh in for a club. For example on piru we can bring in 4 fish min 13", but castaic is a "paperweight" tourny unless it's 1 fish or 2 over 18"?.
Re: When do you need a permit for a tournament
Hey (fishin') Rod,
The link Ron sent you is a good one.
I have done this a couple of times for a small tourny we hold at Clear Lake in the spring.
Only recommendation I would make is that you call Fish and Game in Yountville 707-994-5512, when you have a date in mind. They will tell you what other permits have been issued for those dates. That may help you detmine who you may be sharing the water with. Also they will mail you all the stuff you need for permit and the rules for the tournament on the particular lake you choose.
P.S. I'm figuring you are law enforcement..or wanting to be
I am a dispatcher for the Sonoma County Sheriff and the tourney we hold in spring is for Cops and Fire. Please let me know if you have any interest in participating.

Re: When do you need a permit for a tournament
Hey Rod -
from what i understand, permits are required:
1) if awards or prizes are to be awarded.
2) if you are culling bass for the purpose of catch and release.
3) the DFG form is the same one our club uses for our annual
scheduled club tournaments. we submit this form in January for the whole year.
4) if you apply for the DFG tournament permit, be prepared to provide proof of insurance and additional lake permit fees (i.e., Berryessa, Melones)
5) if the lake you are fishing has a slot limit (i.e., Mclure, Melones) and you wish to catch and release fish outside the slot limit.
6) if you file for the permit... you are required to submit a tournament report.... there is another form.
7) http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fishing/html/Publ ... ontest.htm
8 ) the tournament permit & reports helps DFG monitor the Bass population & fishing.
9) http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fishing/html/Fish ... test_0.htm
10) the tournament permit helps DFG, your tournament date is placed on a public calendar.
in my opinion...
i think the DFG annual permit is a good thing.
it helps legitimizes... bass fishing & tournament bass fishing.
it helps DFG... allocate more resources on highly fished waterways.
but...
for 10 guys with 5 boats, who are using a paper tournie (catch and release)... i think it's an over kill.
i guess it all comes down to time & money.
