has anyone used bass pro "Extreme" reels and rods?
I'm looking at possibly purchasing the Extreme rod/reel combo from bass pro. Does anyone have an opinion on it. I'm going to use it for heavy flipping/pitching, which reel (there is a choice of about 7 would you suggest? Is the 7'6" rod any good?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Bassman

Dude if you are hooked on fishing already PLEASE dont buy anything other that a bionic blade from BPS line but wait i had all those about 8-9 yrs ago and now i have found the light with all st croix!! ...... seriously though if you're strapped for cash buy shimano rods they are unconditional replacement even if you run the TISH over with your truck they will replace for free. Walton's Pond in San Leandro is a Dealer and will give you an over the counter replacement free if you break it ( been there done that) and they are around 60$ for the cheaper ones( which are better than any BPS rod) and 130$ for the big deal ( definately above AVG rods) or you can go all ST CROIX AVID series ( like me )which will go on sale for XMAS at walton's for A great deal !! call him up 510-352-3932 he can guide you in the direction you want or can afford cause he doesn't just push the big line. He carries Powell also (a great line ) Well call him up tell him the lancer told YA ( no im not sponsered or getting paid he's just a great tackle and rod man ) good luck let us know what you choose!! - LANCER

I've never fished with any of that stuff but it all seems pretty decent. Their reels are nice looking, smooth, and have a good freespool but I believe they are made by Pinnacle so who knows about long-lasting quality there. The old Extreme rods were heavy but the new ones that have been out for several years now are real nice and pretty light, I think they would be a fine rod to use. The BPS Extreme, Pro Qualifier, and Signature Series rods are actually all pretty impressive rods....very nicely finished and LIGHT.

Brian,
I don't own one, but did recommend one to my neighbor in Discovery Bay who casts for stripers 2 months out of the year off his dock.
He ordered the combo with a Shimano Curado SF. I suggested that he get the 7' MedHvy.
It turned out to be a great rod for the money. I was impressed with the Fuji guide system, the power hump made it comfortable to cast and hold. And the most surprising aspect is the rods IS SENSITIVE!
Lancer has a good point, St. Croix rods are nice and Walton's is a great shop to purchase your gear at. But I see that the rods are on sale, great value for $69.99. You can't beat that if you're looking for a good entry level rod. In my opinion, you can't beat the money vs. performance with a $70 price tag.
Good luck with your shopping,
Long
P.S. When your money allows, check the the Kistler Helium series...They're my favorite.

While I've not owned one of these in a very long time, my recollection is that they tend to be a bit heavy (weight wise) ... I would recommend instead the Shimano Clarus (~60-70)or Crucial (~$130) if you are looking for some moderately price items.
These Shimano rods have all Fuji components and their blanks are the legacy of Loomis technology (built in China though). But most of all, their warrantee is second to NONE!! Over the counter exchange with ANY retailer, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Don't have to deal with the hassell of shipping, etc. I firmly believe that these are some of the best rod for the money you can buy right now.

My partner has the 7' crankbait extreme rod. I have used it many times and have been tempted to get one, for the price it is hard to beat. It is great for blades and crankbaits.

THEY ARE VERY GOOD RODS AND REELS. HOW EVER WE RECOMMEND DIAWA REGAL 1000/ 2000 OR 2500 Xi with 9 BALL BEARING REELS FOR $ 39.99 or MITCHELL AVOCET GOLD FOR ABOUT THE SAME PRICE RANGE. AND BERKLEY PROLITE IM7 RODS FOR $ 39.95 OR THE SERIES ONE ROD FOR ABOUT $ 65.00 THATS JUST OUR CHOICE.

Re: has anyone used bass pro "Extreme" reels and r
I have three Extreme reels, from 2002, and half a dozen rods.
No rod problems, the power hump is great on the rods, lots of guides for good action, durable.
Other than getting salt water on the sleeve bearing (replacement bearing was easily obtained through BPS) on one reel when I fished calicos off Catalina and didn't rinse off well enough, no reel problems.
If Pflueger makes the reels, they do a good job.
And the rods are made in China, like most of the other rods now available.
If this was all I had to fish with, I'd be just fine.

I have a few Extreme rods (Woo Daves) and they are excellent for the money ($59.99 on sale). If money is an issue, I would buy the combo for $99.99. I was intriduced to the St. Croix Avid and the Powell rods, very nice! As money permits, the Extreme rods will be going to junior as I buy a new rod in that St. Croix/Powell rod class. I can't wait to see those new Dobyns rods.
Re: has anyone used bass pro "Extreme" reels and r
I own a bunch of the Extreme rods, I always bought them with the Curado combo when BPS offers them for $99. I also always purchased the weight balancing system. Generally I always felt the rod was fine. However, recently I have had problems with them.
Heres what has happened. The rod has been breaking just above where you screw in the balance weights. It happens when I use a two handed cast. This has now happened 3 times with the newer version rod, and once with the old version.
Clearly its a design flaw. You dont offer a weight balancing system that has the potential to break the rod. BPS has replaced the rod twice, and Im getting ready to send in the 3rd broken one and ask for a refund. I no longer want the rod. Im gonna start looking at other rods because of this problem.
