How to fish cold, cold water

Post by Bassin49er »

Going to be spending some time going for small mouth (and would love to catch large mouth) this Thanksgiving up in the foothills near Lake Tullock. What’s the best way to catch fish in the winter, never really tried before. I will also be going for trout so any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Catch, appreciate, and release.

I have never been to Tulloch but for Smallie fishing I would want at least these baits

1.) Jerkbait
2.) Jig
3.) Tube
4.) Spinnerbiat
5.) Drop Shot

You could probably get away with three rods and rig the tube on your dropshot rod. A Jerkbait\Spinnerbait rod and most definatly a football head jig.

I dont consider the end of thanksgiving to be winter time yet I would venture to say there is still a fall pattern going on.

For your trout a small carolina rig or drop shot works great!

What patterns would you recomend for the:
1.) Jerkbait
2.) Jig
3.) Tube
4.) Spinnerbiat
5.) Drop Shot (I am a sucker for arrons magic but never have landed a smaller on drop shot)

For your trout a small carolina rig or drop shot (pattern specifc to trout?) works great! - Carolina? I have land some nice trout with bass set ups but never on a carolina, what patters?

Thanks for you help!

Bring some hot coco with some Kula, a warn jacket, and hope you get lucky!

For clear water, throw some small spinners, grubs, jerk baits, and night crawlers.

For muddy water, throw anything bright! small spinner baits, baby brush hawgs (grass hopper color), and spider grubs.
Don't be lame. It's just fishing; you are not the new mesiah you know! Check your attitude at the door Mr. Spinners on da boat trailer.

dont be afraid to throw something like nickols 1/2 oz tandem spinerbait in chartuse[ everything blades, body, skirt, trailer.] I've watched fish come from under docks 20' away to hit one on tullock in the winter.

I should specify this is a sliding egg sinker no heavier then 1/4oz 4 lb leader typically I like 12-18 inches. A red Gammie salmon egg hook and I believe they are called Crave Balls they look like (ugh a pearl necklace) take two and hook it so that the bait is floating up the hook shank. These baits will float. (use your split shot rod)

Also too cralwers and the alien pours in a shad pattern for the dropshot. Think small. Small Kastmasters or in-line spinners for smallies and trout.

As for smallie patterns jig Green Pumpkin 297 or 221 Brown Purple on a football head. Jerkbait just a shad pattern rogue, husky or pointer.

I am going Trout\Bass fishing on Friday at collins and plan on bringing about the same setup well minus the smallie gear.
