source for lead for jig pouring?
used tire weights? what are you all using as a source for lead that goes into your lead pots?

SAME, USED TIRE WEIGHTS FROM TWEEDY IN JAMESTOWN INFACT !
Re: source for lead for jig pouring?
i was using tire weights for a while, but i was told that the type of lead is not as good of a grade to use cause of what it was made up of. is this true? it always seemed to work well for me. but i did stop using it. now i buy those 2lb ball weights at the tackle store. they don't fit in the pot so i just set them on top til it melts enough to drop inside. it does take a little longer to melt, but i do think they tend to pour a little smoother then the tire weights do.

I was told the same thing about the tire weights...some sort of tin base inside or something like that. I never used, so I dont know how it pours. I also just buy the lead balls
and go from there.

Re: source for lead for jig pouring?
I used to pour my own sinkers for surf fishing, and used plumber's lead off the jobs I was working on. I imagine it's still available at a plumbing supply. It melts at a low temp., and was easy to pour, as I recall, but that was a looooong time ago.

Tire weights,Just keep cleaning it while it is melting and every so often. And i also use plumbers lead.It is very soft.I personally never had any problems with the tire weights. But do remember to keep cleaning it and all the junk off of the top.

And don't inhale the fumes....
Use a fan to blow them away from you, and NEVER pour in the house. The garage or tool shed is okay, but be sure to have good ventilation. Lead fumes are bad news, especially for kids and pregnant women.

Re: And don't inhale the fumes....
Being a shop that works with literally tons of lead every month I would suggest a few safety tips:
1) Always wear gloves, latex or some other type, but always wear them.
2) As Mark suggested, use a fan, but even more important a WELL ventilated space. Fumes are toxic!
3) Never sand or grind or get lead dust airborne.
4) Be mindful of good cleanup, residual lead contamination does not dissipate, it will remain forever. Use paper to lay down in the area your working in, throw it away immediately when done.
5) Clothing, never wash it with other stuff, cross-contamination is something to be worried about-even when dealing with very small amounts!
Lead poisoning can take place over a long period of time, effects can take years to show up. Precautions may seem like overkill with the small amount you would deal with in your garage, but remember very small amounts of lead can be dangerous, especially for children and pets.
By the way, I have a lead melting pot, 100-875 deg range in good
shape-free to whoever want to pick it up in Oakley.

Ken,
Jason had only two things to do that day, catch fish and keep me out of the water. Care to guess which one of the two he failed at? ha-ha. By the way, that was supposed to be our little secret!

Re: source for lead for jig pouring?
Hay Mike D: If you are close to Waltons Pond I can give you all the lead you want, I have about 200 lb and need to get rid of it. I was poring like a mad man, but not to much now. It is really good quality lead, low temp and clean. E-mail me at rdodds1660@aol if you are interested.
