Would you rather have a new 18' w/150 Optimax or 10 yr old?

Post by Jon »

Would you rather fish out of an 18' new boat with a new 150 Optimax, or a 10 year old 20' boat with a 200? The new boat would be a Basscat. The older boat could be anything.

New boat, get a warranty, less troubles than an older boat.

It really depends on the types of water and seasons you fish. If you fish big water with nasty weather, the larger boat would benefit you more (as long as it is dependable ie.. get a compression check and service records). Their is a guy selling an 06' basscat 18' with 175 opti (never been in the water-prize boat) in Oroville....

I was in your shoes two years ago. I purchased the 18 1/2 foot ranger 185vs and 175 optimax new. I got a super warranty (motor till 2010). Nothing like having the confidence everytime out that you can just turn the key and go. Sure for the 29k I spent I could have got a used 520 with an older optimax with problems........I sometimes wish I had a bigger boat (on rough days) but when it is calm, I go just as fast as big boats. I also burn less gas. Easy to tow etc. I dunno, but you get alot more piece of mind with a brand new boat....Just my two cents.

Jon,

For fishing local stuff the 18 would be my choice. If you plan on fishing the big water lakes once in a while i think you will be fine. Like Ken said, an 18 footer suited him for years. When your ready to move into something larger the timing might be better. The points about the warranties are right on. RR

Real simple answer, YES..Any boat is better than no boat..And generally speaking a new boat is preferable to an older boat..

Thanks for all the insight

The kicker here is I won the 18' w/150 Optimax. I was considering selling it and buying an older bigger boat. The boat hasn't arrived yet so I still have time. I am leaning towards keepeing it. I know I have to pay income tax on it.

I had this exact problem a couple of months ago. So I settled on an aluminum 19" G3 with a 150 HPDI. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who don't like aluminum and will say glass handles and rides better, blah, blah, blah. I've been in plenty of boats and mine rides awesome even in rough water. It has all the bells and wistles, full warranties, very fuel efficient, and tops out at 67 m.p.h. with two guys and gear. For the money you can't beat it!!!!!

Jon, I own A 2004 Sabre with A 150 Opti 23 Temptest Plus on it and it fishes extreamly well. I would go with what your needs are for size though . But all I can say is that you can't beat A BassCat for all around performance and fishability. There company goes out of their way to help you even though they are located in Arkansa.Check out their web site basscat.com and look at their owners board. By the way I can run with my cousin 195 Ranger with A 200 Opti on it if I run A 25 Temptest Plus but I like the over all performance of the 23 Temptest. I out run Ranger 185s with 175 Opti's on them all of the time.

Good luck in your decision and I don't think that you would be disatisfied at all with the Sabre 150 Opti Package.

If your interested, I have a GORGEOUS 2004 Champion 187 w/ Opti 150 for sale right now!!! SERIOUS upgrades, ie: recessed trolling motor, Prop, X-17 GPS and deck mounted graph, hotfoot, lighted compartments, hydraulic steering, etc.

GREAT BIG water boat for a 18 1/2' boat. I have swallowed up plenty of 20' boats on Clear Lake and Berryessa when conditions have been NASTY, without tearing things up or sending batteries through the deck!! ha ha Runs 60-62mph GPS w/ 2 in the boat and tourney load...plus the fuel savings CANNOT be beat!

ALL WITH LOW LOW hours....pm me for photo's or email me at
