Stripers in San Luis Reservoir

Post by baycrew1 »

Hey there everyone, my father and I would like to go fishing out at San Luis reservoir (not the forebay) for Stripers tomorrow and I could use your help. Being that it has been quite some time since I had gone out for Stripers I am a bit rusty.

Any information on what to use and how to use it would be EXTREMELY helpful. We'll be out on our Crestliner which is equipped with Finshfinders and GPS but no downriggers.

Let me know and I'll be sure to let you know of our results.

Thanks!

My buddy has been taking his two kids out there every other weekend using jumbo minnows in depths up to 80 feet. I'm not sure where he was at, but good places to check out include the Trash Racks and Portuguese cove. The fish should be schooling up chasing bait, so keep a Rattle Trap tied on and cruise the coves over by Dinosaur Point. Good luck.

that west shore flat in Portegese is awesome....rattle traps work well but lemme tell ya you aint NEVER had a strike like a 15-18 lb striper when he slams your fluke or an alike jerkbait! My neighbor got me started over there and he lost a pretty expensive set up when a "Big Boy" slammed him and ripped his rod right outta his hand and to the deep! Devils horse, zara spooks,Vixensetc also work on the schoolers! I like to use frozen shad when I baitfish-if you go within about 50-75 yds from the actual tubes of the "trash rack" there is a step up of about 15'.....man that is an awesome spot to hang around. I take one of them sliding plastic dohickies that your line slides through that has a swivel attched (hope u know what I mean!) and put a hook off that then I take and put a 2oz weight on. I hook the frozen shad through the body right behing the gills-bring it through and bury the point of the hook in the head where the point is barely sticking out the otherside. Now swivel the shad around where he is parralel with the line and put a half hitch of line around his tail...this keeps him straight and you dont get robbed of bait so often. This has worked VERY well for me over there. There is also some great trolling to be had even with leadcore in Portegese....rapalas and such are hot. My dad and I went over one morning and by 0830 we were back on the trailer with our our fish (remember u cant launch till 0700!) we had 2 10's,1 11 and 1 13 lber. We went back the next morning and were back on the trailer by 0800 with 54lbs for our four fish! I will tell you this-I tied on a BRAND NEW Rapala that I had changed the hooks and split rings out the heavier ones. We trolled for about 40 yds and I got hit.....this fish almost immedietly spooled me so we chased it down....I fought it for 11 minutes by Dads watch when my line just went slack. When I got over the heartbreak I reeled in to find my back hook,O ring and the screw in eye were all ripped out and gone...the second treble was pulled so hard that the O ring opened up and the hook was gone...the front hook had one straightened out and the o ring was all streched out! I LoVE my largemouth but these stripes can fight!!!When this place is hot it is HOT-by the way this is the bEST time of the year for the big uns! Tight Lines and good luck to you and your dad-take it from me cherish ever single moment out there with him-please let us know how u do!

........ going the opposite direction and head out to the Delta. The striper bite is on over there. Heard Max might be heading out there this weekend, but you gotta be up early to jump on that boat! Outta tha door by 4.30am....ouch!!!! You're gonna need some pearl colored swimbaits and a spook. It's on friday and saturday!
