What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the water?
Martin Wall and I were fishing the Delta one afternoon running tulle islands around Mildred. We were flipping black jigs and the bite was real good.
So we're just about up to this isolated clump of tulles and they start shaking violently. Being as competitive as we are, we start fighting to see who can get the first pitch on the tulle. Martin gets his bait in first and sets the hook like a wild man as his jig is falling. He misses it. I cast in, feel a massive thump, set the hook and miss it to. We probably made another 2 casts and then we see two heads pop up from where we were casting.
Apparently, two Vietnamese women were diving for crawdads or some kind of crab/shrimp and our jigs actually had hit them on the way down. We died laughing thinking about what our reaction would have been like if Martin or I had stuck our jig into one of them and seen a 100 llb. "mamasan" exploding out of the water in pain.
Anyways, it was funny if you were there.

That is damn funny... Good thing you didn't hook one of them...
Just for the visual... were they holding their breath or with snorkels or scuba gear or breathing through bamboo?

We didn't see a snorkel, bamboo or anything. We were concentrated on flipping a big bass.

I was up at Sonoma a few years back with Scott Green and we were in Cherry Creek sticking them left and right and we looked over at this point in the creek and saw a couple of freakin monster rabbits or hares that looked like freakin kangaroos. I'm not exaggerating. They were just huge. I could not get over how big they were and very mean looking. I'd take on a wild pig before I went near one of them. Anyway, we came to the conclusion that these hares were on STEROIDS. That was the only thing we could come up with or they were eating people. This is how we came up with the name called Steroid Point in Cherry Creek for those of you that do not know. Also holds some steroid bass every once in a while also. D.B.COOPER

A good buddy and I were fishing down the Baja at the Bay of Angels and we decided that on this particular morning that we wouldnt go out on the water but would go explore some old mine shafts. We had a great morning and as we were driving back to our cabana on the beach we noticed the sky was turning VERY BLACK. wiyhin 15 minutes there was this hellacious storm with 50-75 mph winds and the bay had probly 10 ft waves. It felt like we were in a sandblasting cabinet! Within thirty minutes the storm disapeared and the water returned to glass once again. We were thankful we were'nt in our 16ft. aluminum boat that morning!

I was on central San Francisco Bay about 10 years ago and a B-1 bomber flew right up the bay, REAL low. Not sure what he was doing, it was springtime...nowhere near fleet week. Definitely cool though.

Black bear swimming across pedro upriver. Thought it it was a dog from a distance. Stopped the boat and watched him swim across , go up the bank and take off.

Spring, two years ago on Oroville we were fishing way back in the middle fork. We heard a strange thunder sound getting louder. I looked west down the middle fork and saw a F-18 Hornet about 50-100 feet from the water surface heading towards us. The jet was so low we saw the color of the pilots helmet and the our chest and ears hurt from the engine noise. A few seconds past us the jet we straight up into a spiral. It was awesome!

My buddy and I were fishing in Whisky Slough, it was very foggy and dead of winter. We saw a guy in a boat shooting his bow and we thought he was shooting carp. When we got to the ramp, he pulled in at the same time with a boat load of dead Beavers (huge Beavers). We asked him what he did with them and he said he skins them and eats part of them. It was still foggy at the time and kind of erie too. I'm a hunter but that was too much!

Lake Havasu launch ramp. Truck and empty boat trailer pulls up to pick up boat. Chick gets out of the raised F-350 Ford, forgets to put it in park. Truck rolls back and completely sinks underwater. Completely sunk. How pissed was her boyfriend?

Fishing at Los Banos Creek, me and my buddy saw a fox chasing a cotton-tail along the shore. We then noticed another fox up above the rabbit, circling down to cut him off. Sure enough the fox ran the rabbit right into the other fox and the rabbit was killed. It was cool to see them hunting as a team like that.
Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
We were fishing the McCloud river arm at Shasta, aways back in an inlet. We heard a ruckus in the brush way up the steep bank to our right. It sounded like something crashing through the undergrowth very fast...comming right towards us. Suddenly a deer came flying out, bounding down the bank and right into the lake, followed immediately by another deer with a bear about two feet behind it! The second deer turned at the water and the bear slipped in the mud and slid in! Man, the whole thing happened about 20 yards away from us, all in about 10 seconds! We got the heck away from the bear, who was much more interested in getting out of the lake than in us.

Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
was fishing at folsom, just happened to look over at a tree that had fallen and half of it was in the water & the other half on the bank. There was a bird on the tree pecking at the bark getting bugs or something outta the bark and the bird was working its way toward the water. When the bird finally got right next to the water line on the log there was a seed settin right there and when the bird went to peck at the seed a huge largemouth swooped up and sucked down the bird!!! I looked over there about five minutes later and saw the fish's mouth come back outta the water and set that seed back on the log !!!! That was the smartest bass ive ever seen.

This was more scarey than strange
I was up in the middle fork on Oroville about five years back during a storm in January. I was fishing close to bank on the real steep stuff. I decided to try the other side of the arm.
Heard a huge noise way up the bank in the trees. Then the trees started cracking and shaking. A boulder bigger than a car had broken loose rolled down the hill and launched pretty close to where I had just been.
Needless to say had that thing hit me I wouldn't be passing this on today.
Beer bottles off of bridges and rocks of the cliffs. I think I'm going to add a hard hat to my list of things to bring.

Re: This was more scarey than strange
Last Sunday at Castaic, I was fishing a wall at Sharon's Rest (the lake is down 70'), and I heard a loud thumping, over the roar of the Santa Ana's that were blowing hard. I turned around and looked toward the dam, and there was a Firefighter helicopter, ten feet off the water, sucking up a load to fight the fire in Moorpark.
I don't know how he held that thing so steady in that wind. And then, as soon as he left, two bright yellow supertanker planes, one behind the other, made their water pickup passes, also into that wind. Talk about amazing! They made it look easy, like there wasn't even a breeze.

I was fishing Lake Shasta and I was running a tree pattern so I see what I thought were some trees in the middle of the lake but they look like they were moving.
There was a pack of deer swimming across the lake.
The following year I saw two eagles fighting over a female during mating time.

i saw two strange things the same day while we were fishing off the queen charlotte islands in b.c. first we saw massive bait ball working the surface so we boated over to it and just before we got to it a whale surfaced about 20 feet from us.. scared the bee jezus out of us. and then on the way back to home boat we saw a bear swimming across the cove and then climbed straight up a rock cliff about 50 feet high . solid rock and he scaled it like he had stairs.

While fishing a tournament on the delta. My partner and I come quickly around a bend and look on the levee and see a biker lady sitting on a biker dude's lap watching the sunrise. Both of their pants were down around their ankles. They didn't even seem bothered by our passing

I would rather jog home from my own Vasectomy than spend Saturday at the mall.
Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
About 9-10 years ago about 1 mile east of DBay- We went out for a spin on our new Zodiac with a 4 stroke Johnson.
There and UP on the levee was a new white 25'+ Cobalt on the rocks. The bow was over the levee and the stren drives' were about 3' from the high tide mark.
Had to of been one hell of an expensive insurance claim- and I am sure the story of how it happened was pure.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I was fishing trout at Melones in the early 80's and we heard a plane flying low and a beautiful red biplane came swooping up the canyon over the lake. Unfortunately for him he took out some power lines and plummeted straight into the lake. It took me a minute or 2 to pull my gear to motor over there and by the time we made it the plane had sunk and another boat was picking up 2 survivors!

MY WIFE AND I WERE FISHING SHASTA LAKE BETWEEN SIVERTHORN AND JONES VALLEY ON THE SOUTH SIDE ALONG A STEEP ROCK BANK. IT WAS A REAL NICE DAY NO WIND REAL QUIET IN THE MORNING.I WAS GOING ALONE THE BANK REAL CLOSE THROWING A CRANK BAIT RIGHT NEXT TO THE BANK, WHEN A CRASHING NOISE GOT ME TO LOOK UP HIGHER ON THE BANK AND WHAT I SEEN GAVE ME CHILLS. HEADED RIGHT AT US WAS A BOULDER ABOUT THE SIZE OF A 1/2 TON PICKUP. I NEVER HAD TIME TO GET THE BIG MOTOR STARTED ,I KICKED THE TROLLING MOTOR IN HIGH AND TRYED TO GET SOME DISTANCE BETWEEN THE BOAT AND THE BANK.I HOLLERED AT MY WIFE TO HIT THE DECK AND COVER HER HEAD AND WHEN IT HIT THE WATER IT JUST MISS US. WE GOT HIT WITH A BUNCH OF SMALL ROCKS THAT LANDED IN THE BOAT. IF IT HAD NOT BEEN A QUIET MORNING AND I HAD NOT LOOKED UP WHEN I DID WE WOULD PROBLEY NOT BE HERE TO TELL THIS STORY. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THAT HUGE BOULDER BROKE LOOSE WHEN IT DID, THE CEMENT PLANT WAS BLASTING UP ON THE MOUNTAIN ,BUT THAT WAS UP BY BRIDGE BAY. AND THEN IT COULD HAVE BEEN A SMALL EARTH QUAKE.

Fuel coming up from the water. Figured someone sank a boat, looked over and saw some white gas on the bank, then thought, somebody got pissed at the lantern and tossed it in. Kept looking at the bank, because I was cranking. Noticed the guardrail had been impacted, and dirt was displaced, figured car. Called dispatch, and local Fire showed up. Tossed a bouy out were I thought the car was. Left, fished hard, and won the club event.
Talked to local law enforcement later and got the story. They recovered a Bronco 2, and while winching it up, a car passing by stops, a big tall blonde gal gets out, and says, "That's mine, I did it!" Nobody else in vehicle so DART calls off search for more victims.
Following that, a famous Bay area coach who will remain nameless shows up and pays for recovery with cash. It seems that was the stripper hired to go out to the hunting club, and he did not want his wife to find out.
Not Fiction!

me and abuddy got chased out of the south end of Anderson by a swan i was in the back of the boat fending it off with the net. while my buddy was standing on the trolling motor but that swan was pretty fast. he stretched his neck once and if he would have wanted to peck the net would have done me no good. It was huge. We couldnt stop laughing for the rest of the day.

It was a few years back, I had a 14' aluminum boat that I had built a casting deck on, I mainly used it in the slow water around Bethel Island. It was during an August heat wave, brutally hot, I got up early so I could fish and be off the water by 10 AM or so. I was in Dutch heading towards the bridge, fishing around the docks and what not, I fished along side of this run down old houseboat, as I moved around the back to fish the other side I was just a few feet from the back of the houseboat, to my surprise I looked up when I heard someone talking, thought they were gonna tell me I was invading their space or whatever and low and behold there is a women talking on the phone buck naked, she was a mountain of a women, she startled the hell out of me and I darn near fell of my little boat. I wrapped it up and went home and scrubbed my eyeballs with an S.O.S. pad. I don't get too close to houseboats anymore.

Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
It happened to be in my own boat and it is pretty gross.
I had taken a friend fishing who has never been on the water before. I told him that you should try and go the bathroom before we get on the water. Needless to say about an hour into our trip he tells me that he has to go the bathroom. I tell him ok, I think there is a floating bathroom around the corner. Well this I guess causes him to relax and the urgency gets more intense. Well we come around the corner and there is no bathroom. He is whining and hollering that he has to go, so I tell him hold on I will go to shore.
Before I could even get the boat started in the direction he has his butt hanging over the side moaning and groaning. It was the most disgusting thing, but I am sure the catfish are happy.

Strangest thing I have ever had happen on the water. On Folsom last year, I am heading up the north arm, make the turn to go past Rattlesnake bar and there is a flock of geese on the water. I slow down and start heading to the left of where they are. They all take off and start heading to the right. I head left and throttle back up, just in time for the last goose to make a 180 and head left. He hit right at the bow eye. I had goose down in my boat for a month!!
Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
Last year during the Stren Havasu pre-fish my wife and I were coming down the river when I had on cove I would fish real fast and go. As I worked my way in we saw something floating thought it was a life jacket. Stop fishing and got closer. As I got right on top of it I could see hands down in the water. It was a floatin dead guy. Cell phone was dead. So we ran down river to the first boat we could find and it was the guy from Japan could hardly speek English. As we try to understand each other it happens he found him earlier and was wait for the Sherrif boat. What was really bad was my wife wanted to turn him over to see his face. I had seen enough.

These are some great stories! Brian you get the award so far!
I have seen a few things happen on the water, including the deer crashing in the water only to look up and see a MINNKOTA steering him in his eyes! Big ol buck! If Dobyns were there he woulda put the t-motor on high and wrastled with that thing.
...Shasta is an amazing place for nature and its wildlife....I look forward to the bald eagles everytime we go there and to watch them come down and swoop up a fish 30 ft. from the boat is pretty awesome!
but the story I want to share happens only in the south.....We were fishin Lake seminol in march and the water was trying to warm up so when the sun came out the Gators would surface and sun themselves......

Ah shoot! Lunch is ready I'll be right back!

Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
Ok I am back! So I go back in this cove and as I turn the corner I see about 100 floating logs....Big floating logs!!!! well until they all of sudden started moving.
I didnt have my contacts back then.....It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen..
They were very sluggish and there were gators as big as my boat! Well not quite, but there were 14 to 16 footers and 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide. maybe BIGGER! I dont know but it was freaky and you know I got pretty close to them, probably to close.
But I remember as I was t-motoring on high to go by these gators a small 14 ft aluminum fishing boat was cruisin over to the lay down tree where they were hangin! I dont care what size crappie this lady was going to catch ..I WOULDNT BE ANYWHERE NEAR THAT TREE!......
I honestly wanted to go and let this lady know what I saw there! But the only thing I could think of was this 70 year old lady was gunna be laughin at this good ol California boys face!
So I didnt,
I fished that cove for two hours and never did see this lady come back!
so I go into the next cove and I have my radar on now, but this cove is very shallow like 5 ft max compared to the 20 ft in the other cove, and it is surrounded with floating lilly pads The water is a typical southeastern color which is a tanic/clear color so if the fish were beddin I probably could see them if the sun was out! So this cove is 100 yards wide and has two openings where there is no lilly pads ,about the size of three boat lengths each! ( probably more detail than you want to hear ) and I am targeting the edge of these openings (Senkos)So after fishing the first opening I put the t-motor on high and headed to the other opening basically crashing through the pads. so I am entering the other opening and I take the foot off the pedal and am drifting into the ZONE!...............I make a cast and at the same time I see this gator the size of my house, thunder his way into the water through the pads into the water............................Now according to the direction i was drifting (rather Quickly) ...and the direction he was going.....................This was not good!........I vividly remember trying to decide if I should hit the trolling motor or just drift?...................Well I drifted!.................and I looked down!
................I have never felt so helpless in my entire life!.....................I honestly FROZE....I saw the biggest eyes and the biggest head of any gator I had ever seen. Now I know it was coincidental he was under the boat at that time, but it was FREAKY! I ended up drifting as long as I could over this gator and finally took off as fast as I could, and if you dont think I was lookin behind me your CRAZY!
The good ol days!

Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
Ya ever seen a 300 lb. man bear hug a mercury trying to answer Mother Nature?
It's ugly!
It's ugly!
While Fishing a West Coast Bass.......
ProAm out of Ladds, I had to use my emergancy back up boat for the first day due to some mechanical issues. We git ta Ladds and it's pouring down rain, wind is gusting out of the north east about 45 mphr. Really ugly. If I'm not mistaken, I was paired with Mark Mendez that day, who was fishing in his first ever Pro-Am, or maybe first ever Pro-Am on the Delta. I got my first chuckle of the day as he showes up dressed in this puffy little orange rains suit, really looked like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, the Michellin Tire Boy, you git the picture. Not that any of this was strange at all, but as I'm flyin down river towards Frank's Tract, and it's rockin and rollin, I'm stayin WAY right and just flyin by all those poor souls who were running right up the gut of the channel, getting pounded.
Bout the time I hit Venice, man, it sounds like my boat is falling ta pieces. And I can hear this obnoxious sounds over the motor and howling wind. My passenger has no clue as to what's taking place, he's so bundled up and comfy, he's oblivious to all this commotion in the boat. As I turn the corner into Washington Cut, I can now feel my boat falling apart right next to my right leg. It's like all the stuff I got packed up in my utillity compartment is falling out at my feet. Just as we hit the tulles at the east entrance to Frank's, and I'm doing between 65-70 mph now, this grey mass flies from under the steering wheel up into my lap, then flies accross to the rod locker, bounces up and flies right in front of my console windshield, does a U turn from there and hops in one motion onto the rod locker lid. At that instance I realize it's a critter, a grey fellal cat from the orchards around my house that had stowed in the boat. Was prolly living inside during the rains.
Anyhow, this friggen cat hits the rod platform on all fours and leaps over the gunnel straight out of the boat. In mid flight, this thing with eyes now the size of silver dollars, takes a quick glance over his left shoulder back at me. I'll never fergit the " OH $HI+! what have I done" look on that cat's face as it dissappeared into the spray and wash of Franks Track. Straight out of the clips of a Wylie Coyote cartoon with a failed ACME trick look! That cat ws a goner. Later, rumor had it, a guy in a Skeeter came through there bout 10 minutes later, had a lot bigger heart than me. saw and tried ta rescue that cat. The crashing waves of Franks sunk his boat, so they say.
So if'n yer the supersticious type, believe in bananas and black cats passing around yer ladders, don't cross the path of this Grey ferral kitty swimmin' round Frank's Tract, he's still out ta git me, and just might mistake yer boat fer mine!

Re: What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the wate
At Lake Casitas , fishing swimbaits on back side of Island when I heard some kids yelling and screaming from another boat . I thought they were just having a good time . When I looked over at the boat , now doing about 30 mph a cat bailed out . The cat apparently made a home in the boat while parked in there driveway . I watched the cat as it came closer to me thinking it wanted out of the water so I netted it and put it on the deck . It aparently dident like my boat either becouse it jumped right back in and swam to the island . Bad idea becouse that island is loaded with coyotes .
Speaking of coyotes , I saw one there working the same shoreline on a regular basis . One day I threw my Huddelston on the mud bank shook it a couple times and had an almost instant bite from that Coyote , swung and missed . When my buddy was done laughing he asked what I was going to do if I had stuck it . I dont know but it seemed like a good idea at the time ! Duh .
