What's the strangest thing you've seen while on the water?

Post by Brian Linehan »

Martin Wall and I were fishing the Delta one afternoon running tulle islands around Mildred. We were flipping black jigs and the bite was real good.

So we're just about up to this isolated clump of tulles and they start shaking violently. Being as competitive as we are, we start fighting to see who can get the first pitch on the tulle. Martin gets his bait in first and sets the hook like a wild man as his jig is falling. He misses it. I cast in, feel a massive thump, set the hook and miss it to. We probably made another 2 casts and then we see two heads pop up from where we were casting.

Apparently, two Vietnamese women were diving for crawdads or some kind of crab/shrimp and our jigs actually had hit them on the way down. We died laughing thinking about what our reaction would have been like if Martin or I had stuck our jig into one of them and seen a 100 llb. "mamasan" exploding out of the water in pain.

Anyways, it was funny if you were there.

Now that is funny.
I will say 1 of the funnier things I saw . I was fishing Casitas about 10 years ago. It was during the spawn. I had no g.p.s. at that time and was practicing for a tournament. I had found a nice fish on a bed and was going to mark the spot where the bed was by putting something in a bush. I found some red zip ties and was going to put it on a branch. As I reach for the branch there is something hanging on it. Well it was a condom. So I decide to back away and throw up because you know what condition it was in. I could not believe someone actually was useing that to mark a fish.
Some of you know who this person is but I will not say for fear of a very bad reprisal.

While fishing at El Salto a few years ago, a buddy of mine who had been unable to crack the 10 lb. barrier in four previous trips there was getting really stressed out before the last day of fishing.

Out of desperation, he decided to resort to live bait in the form of some very large frogs that come out in the evening and are numerous along the resort's pathways. He put five of them inside a plano box along with a little agua to keep them "fresh" overnight.

The next morning we started out throwing topwaters and the bite was decent but nothing over about 4 lbs. I put on a large prop bait, and several casts later connected on one in the 8 to 9 lb. range. Upon seeing this, this guy figured it was time to pull out a frog. With great anticipation and trembling hands, he pinned the frog through the lips on a 6/0 worm hook tied to 50 lb. braid on a flippin' stick. He reared back to cast and let fly towards a patch of hyacinth. I swear that frog hadn't traveled more than thirty feet when a large Osprey swooped down out of nowhere and nailed that bait in mid-air. It took it way back up to the trees while my buddy free-spooled the reel to avoid hooking the bird. He ended up snagged way up in the forest, couldn't break it free and had to cut off nearly all of his braid. I was laughing so hard, my whole face was hurting and I couldn't even think about trying to fish... but that was just the start!

During the rest of the morning, two more frogs were drilled in mid-air by the "blur" of two other Ospreys, one managed to splash down and was soon under attack by a pack of ravenous mojarras (panfish) which took all four legs off, and one splat down on the bank in the back of a cut where it was immediately jumped on by a heron that was on the bank just a few feet away (duh).

I have never laughed so hard and for so long as I did that morning and I honestly hope that I never do again. It was painful to the point of me pleading with him to not put another frog on after the first two got creamed!

I wouldn't say this is the funniest, but it was something I haven't forgotten in nearly 30 years.
One time my parents took us to visit my grandparents in northeastern Arkansas. I liked to bass fish as a kid so my dad decides to take me to this eery looking lake. I think it was called Big Lake or something to that effect. Basically all flooded timber. We rented a boat and proceeded to fish all day in cold, windy conditions. We weren't getting bit at all. Then my dad sees a lure stuck on the bank by the water's edge and puts the aluminum rental over that way and telling me to reach over the side to get it. The wind was lapping the water against the metal boat and I was reaching like heck for this lure while trying not to fall out of the boat. Right about the time I could reach the lure I hear this loud noise and my dad yelling to "grab it, grab it". I thought I did grab it, it's right here in my hand, then I turn around to see a 3-4 pound bass flopping around in the bottom of the rental boat and my dad fumbling about trying to grab it. I sat there in shock. Turns out the bass actually JUMPED IN THE BOAT...and we kept it, the only fish we caught or saw all day...lol. True story.

In Brazil and the Amazon there are litterally MILLIONS of trees. When you are flying in it looks like green shag carpet for as far as the eye can see. Keith Anderson is one of my Peacock Bass group and one day threw his super spook into the center of a tree on the edge of the bank. Went in to get it and when he moved the branch to get his bait there was a Sloth right next to it. He screamed and almost fell out of the boat. Whats the chance. Rick G.

I brought 2 fish to the weigh in one time, I thought it was a sighn of things to come, you know, learning more, becoming a better angler and so forth. But its been over a year now and I'm still being called the "1 hit wonder" by my friends. I havent been able to duplicate that awsome day since then :?
