Lowrance vs. Eagle

Post by Gator »

Now that the color fishfinder subject has been brought up again, can anyone tell me the major differences between Lowrance and Eagle? I know they are mdae by the same company, so I wonder why Eagle is about 20% cheaper than Lowrance.

Note - I have two Lowrance units currently - X85 on bow and LMS-160 MAP on console. Looking to upgrade both to color, so the reason for my question.

Gary's right, that 987c is one awesome unit.

The 787c is also killer for a bow unit.

The separation of the objects underater is amazing...

Generally, the latest technologies make their debut in the Lowrance line and then trickle down to the Eagle units in a season or two...

When I was looking into them, I found that when compared to Lowrance, the same model Eagle has either lower resolution or less watts. That's why the price is lower. Check the watts and resulotion on the model you're interested in. Here's the specs for the LMS/Fishmark 480.

Lowrance LMS 480

High-detail 480V x 480H resolution
4,000 W peak-to-peak power

Eagle Fishmark 480

High-definition 480x480 resolution
1500 watts of peak-to-peak power

Gator,

Blue_R70 is on the right track.

In general terms, the primary difference from a technology standpoint is that new models are debuted as Lowrance products, and after they are replaced with newer Lowrance versions (with new features), the oldies but goodies (those that were popular) are reborn as Eagle units so they are kept in the product line at a value price. Lowrance units have new waterproof heavy duty connectors, Eagle units do not. Lowrance units can be networked; Eagle units cannot. You get the idea.

From a marketing standpoint, the top stores and marine dealers get to sell Lowrance brand, and the value chain stores sell Eagle. Advertisements for Lowrance are appeal to customers wanting cutting edge technology, and advertisements for Eagle are for those who are on a budget but want top quality products without the latest bells and whistles.

Today's Lowrance units are tomorrow's Eagle units.

Hope this helps clear it up.

Gator,

For what ever it is worth I sure miss my Eagle's GPS/Fishfinders that I had on my last boat, for the price they are worth it just a tad bit older technology is all.

Them new Humminbirds are sure sweet though!!!!!!

So would you say that for someone who only fishes 3 days a month the Eagle products would suit just fine?

Jon,

This opinion is based upon not wanting to spend a ton of money yet get a quality product for the price, if so you cannot go wrong with this product and it's ease of use plus it just flat does the job!!!!!!!! :) :) :) See Link below
