Help me motor question?

Post by Ba-Ba-Bass »

I have a 97 ranger 461 with a 150 xr6 motor that had a new power head in 2002 and that I just sucked a reed in last month $3000 to fix Question is: DO I spend the money to get a new 175 Optimax ($12000) or just fix it and hope. Newer boat isn't in the mix for a few years other wise I'd fix and sell

Keep the XR6 and replace the reeds w/ Bosen Carbon Fiber reeds and the motor will continue to run like a champ. YOu will NEVER get that money spent on a new Opti out of that boat, so replacing the reeds is by far the better option at about $500.

Scott hit it right on the head. The dual carbon fiber reeds are the way to go. The stock factory reeds are metal and when they break off, they go into the piston chamber often scarring the cylinder walls. The carbon fiber reeds will increase your engine performance and if they break off, they will be burnt upon entry into the piston/cylinders thus not causing engine damage. Well worth the money to fix the Xr6, they are incredible motors with a good life span if taken care of.........

I agree with Scott 100%,, You could never recover the investment for the Opti... The Xr6 is one of the most dependable engines out there...and with Bosen's you will get more midrange and top end from the 150...

From a dealers viewpoint all the previous answers are correct. Unless that is your favorite boat and you are going to own it FOREVER it is not worth spending the $ on a new motor. When you go to sell it it will still be a 97' Ranger and only worth so much. Fix it. Rick G.

I see you're in Gridley. If memory serves me correctly, Lyle Gossett lives in your area and rebuilds motors. Might want to look him up if you haven't already.

No Ken. Lyle's in Galt. Had to see him twice this year. He even sent me a Christmas card. :D
