Powell rod opinion
I fish Oroville a lot...I recently purchased a Powell spinning rod 682 ML X-Fast. I throw dartheads, shaky heads and split shot. I love the feel of the 682 with the soft tip and stiff backbone. I was thinking about purchasing the 701 L X-Fast. I was told that the 701 would be a good rod for split shotting. It feels nice but, can it handle catching fish in the 5+ lbs. range, if I were to ever reach that point in my fishing adventures? Or, stay with the 682?
I use a Powell 702 ML Fast for splitshotting...
...because it has a slightly stiffer action than does the 701 L Ex-Fast. This helps to pull the splitshot through the junk a little better without loading up too much. The 702 ML is also a killer darthead rod! That being said, there is no better dropshot rod than the Powell 701 L Ex-Fast (IMHO).
Re: Powell rod opinion
The 701 should be perfect for what you want. Most fishing rods can handle a 5lb Bass, it just depends on what type of structure youre using it around. Obviously youre going to mainly use that rod for finesse techniques w/ light line away from any thick cover. That extra fast action will be nice when dropshotting real deep water or popping a darthead thru rock or sparse grass. Might as well get it, 2 Powells are better than 1 anyway

Gary Dobyns told me he designed the 702 ML Ex-Fast for himself. It's his choice. I have 4 of those 702's. Used them for the first time on Oroville this past week. I was very pleased with the action and sensitivity.

Re: Powell rod opinion
I have a Powell Max drop shot rod. I like it except, the hook holder is on the wrong side for me. I would prefer it on the top of the rod or the left side of the rod. I don't like changing hands to secure the hook.
