The lakes in southern California are some of the best big bass lakes for kayak fishing. The lakes are on average smaller than most of the deep reservoirs in California’s foothills. Lower Otay lake has tulles, aquatic vegetation and deep rock structure for the angler to hunt for the illusive bass. The fishermen can find several patterns either in the shallow structure or the deeper structure to catch bass. One can say it is a fisherman’s perfect combination for anglers' success-just fish your strengths. The water temperature was in the high 80’s with the air temperature ranging to the high 90’s with overcast Skys. Once the lines were out and all the fish were submitted to TourneyX Rachel Uribe won with an impressive Lower Otay 82.00” besting second place by 1.75”. Uribe started in one arm of the lake and finished in a different arm. Her first stop produced two fish on a 3/16-ounce ball head paired with a 3.3 Keitech. One of the fish caught was an 18.50” bass first thing in the morning. Uribe moved to the second arm around noon and started to throw a Vixen walking bait.
“I was going to go big or go home so I started to throw the topwater Vixen walking bait.”
Uribe fished in an area that she had done well in the past and this area proved to still hold the bigger fish.
“I was working the Reaction Innovation Vixen slowly because that is how the bass in Otay like it.”
Uribe saw many fish suspended in 10-feet of water while she was fishing. She saw a fish breach and tossed her Vixen and caught that fish. Uribe only caught 6 fish all day, but they were the right fish to pull off her second win with the SoCal kayak fishing. Uribe also thanked her sponsors Bridgford Foods, Voss Weights, Reaction Innovation, Bioenno Power, Torch Eyewear, Robo Worms, SIMMS, Daiwa, Performance Tackle, Sunline, Dalton Toyota and A&M Graphics.
