Post by bassmeout »

I'm thinking of raffling off my boat / is an very well care for
04 SKEETER TZX 200 WITH 200HPDI. ( Low hours )

The ticket will cost $200.00 a piece / No more than 150 tickets will be sold. I will do the drawing at Extreme Outdoors on a Saturday to make sure everyone is present. ( Who ever wins will take the boat home the same day )

Need everyone opinions to make sure there's an interest before I make the flyers and start selling tickets.

Any questions please fell free to call me.

That would be a lottery and illegal by California State law.

Why dont you figure out the boats actual value and sell one ticket at that price for the raffle. Then it will be legal, and you can guarantee a winner for every ticket!!!

Martino:
Regardless if it is a raffle or lottery, it is illegal. The State could potentially charge you with one or possibly more misdemeanors. The State may also seize your boat and funds collected if you are caught. If you want to swim through the legal jargon here is the link to the CA penal code that deals with lotteries and raffles.

This may also raise eyebrows for those who conduct raffles where people purchase tickets. You have to be a non-profit or raise funds for a charitable purpose in order to conduct a legal lottery/raffle.

On a sidebar, it would be a nice and affordable shot at a great boat. Too bad Johnny Law won’t support this.

Well, Thank you for your infomation. I'm not trying to do anything illegal here. I just figuered someone will want a chance to own a 04 fiberglass boat for $200.00

I figuered by doing this I was going to be available to change someone life. I would it like to see a non boater purchase a ticket for $200.00 and walk away with a boat.

Thank you,

Martino.

I have heard that if you have people write in why they should have your bass boat and they are willing to give you a 200.00 processing fee to read why they should have the boat, I guess nobody would know how you reached your decision. It might have been decided by a great story or maybe somebody actually had a secret drawing with enough credible people who will keep their mouths shut. If you know what I mean.

here's a question...

if it was legal and you went forward with selling tickets....what if you didnt sell 150 tickets....say for example you only sold 20.....would you still go forward w/ the raffle and lose $$$

so at 150 x 200 = 30k you may have been looking to get more than your asking 26.5k.....but would you be willing to lose $ ?

just thought that would be an interesting scenario

Give it away raffle at a Bass tournament and donate proceeds to a non profit org. That way it will be legal. I think you are allowed to keep a percentage for operating costs like all tournament raffles ?
keep the dollar per ticket small less conspicuous.

Worst case scenario, you sell all the tickets, and you end up saying your buddy won the boat (even tho you keep the boat, give it to your buddy, or there never was an actual boat) and there are 150 people who just threw away $200.00.

Best case scenario, you conduct an honest raffle and some lucky person gets a boat for $200.00 and 149 people just threw away $200.00.

Raffles are designed to benefit charities. When I buy a raffle ticket from them, regardless of weather I win something or not, I know I just contributed to that charity and cause. It's something I can feel good about.

If a non boater can afford to throw away $200.00 on a raffle ticket, they can definitely afford a boat payment. Personal raffles are not the greatest idea Martino, and not just because of the legal issues. I highly recommend selling the boat on the classifieds.

Some may call that pessimism and other may call it the reality of the world we live in. In today's world you have to protect yourself from predators. I never buy anything over the phone (NEVER). I am extremely careful about eBay and all of my online shopping. I don't open the door for solicitors (that’s how crooks case a house and neighborhood). And I would never buy a raffle ticket from anything other than a charity I know and support.

Just my 2 cents...
