Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
Thinking about upgrading my raingear and would like opinions on both of these both negative and positive. I know Cabelas has insulated gear but I'm probably going to option for the uninsulated ones. For the price of them I want to get the best bang for the buck so to speak. Bass Pro's 100 mph or Cabelas Guide series. Thanks for the imput. Dan

Dan,
Best advice ever - pay the money to get the best raingear. its going to last you and pay for itself over and over. glad you're doing it.
Uninsulated is surely the way to go. you can always add layers underneath, but that fully insulated suit is real hard-core, and you usually dont need it for around here.
As for the preference of Cabelas guidewear vs BPS 100 MPH; you wont be dissapointed with either one. they both are just about the same and "high quality". i have owned both and would keep both.
One difference i noticed thats a plus for BPS 100 is that their neck/hood area is micro-fiber covered on the inside, which feels better on your cold, unshaven face. the Cabelas is not.
one negative that a lot of guys dont like about the BPS 100 suit is the blazing advertizing on the jacket and pants. it is pretty blazing and big.
Other than that, they both are awesome.

Hey Dan,
My buddy just got a new pair of the cabela's guideware "new" style. They have done away with the velcro down the front and sides of the legs and have come up with a rubber sealing system that looks pretty good. I think that this will be much mort flexable then the velco system. You should check it out.

Re: Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
I just recently purchased the 100MPH and so far I have no complaints..I bought them this summer when I found them on sale..I got the bright red set (jacket and bibs)..They should be able to spot me, if I happen to fall in..I haven't had an opportunity to wear the set in really nasty weather yet, but have worn the jacket on brisk morning runs..So far no complaints..Truthfully I would just as soon never have to use it, but I figure I am better off with them than without..

Re: Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
I Have only used the Cabelas raingear with all the Velcro and have been very happy with it. I have fished some pretty nasty weather at night and staying dry is necessary for survival!! If there is an improvement to all the Velcro, that would probably be a good thing!

I am also really happy with my Cabelas guide wear. I would suggest getting the jacket a size or two larger than normal so you can add multiple layers when it's really cold out. Again, the uninsulated version if the way to go..... the insulated stuff will be way too warm to wear during most spring rains...
The BPS is a quality product too....... which ever is the best price, you'll be happy with either

Re: Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
I had Cabelas Guidewear and after 8 years of hard fishing/hunting and snowboarding the parka started to get the front neck area of my shirt wet (not bad but just enough to bug me). Bass Pro had there 100 mph jacket/bib set on sale last summer so I bought them. I wore them 2 times and sold them to my brother
and bought Cabelas Guidewear again. More comfortable and easier to fish out of all day. I will never own another brand again (I do have frogg toggs for spring/summer showers). DO NOT get the insulated ones unless you have extremely thin blood and freeze really easy. If you get the Bibs all you need is the guidewear jacket. The Parka is long and you do not need it unless you have rain pants-not bibs. Good luck, any more questions or if you want to try mine, give me a call Jason Bubier 530-521-8403

EXCELLENT POINT!
Fast,
that is an excellent point that i always forget to mention.
The parka jacket is huge and super long, so unless you are 7ft tall or something, get the regular jacket. it more than covers your lower half and works best with the bibs.

i prefer the cabelas guidewear.
Re: Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
Dan, It's not really gonna matter which of the two ya choose. Upgrading to todays new high end Gortex rain gear is a step that I'd recommend to all fishermen who can afford them. Choosing between Cabelas and BASS Pro shop, is like shopping fer a Ford or Chevy, both have excellent quality products, and a huge fan base either way.Dan Stahlman wrote:Thinking about upgrading my raingear and would like opinions on both of these both negative and positive. I ended up going with the BASS Pro Shops, Pro Qualifier series. I tried on the other two ya mentioned, then this set. I really felt more comfortable in the Pro-Qualifier suit from a fishing stand point. It just seemed like I could move a lot easier. They keep me dry, warm and don't over heat me.
Either way ya go, you'll be making a great investment on your own personal comfort while out there fishing for many years!

Re: Raingear, Cabelas or Bass Pro
Dan,
I own a set of Cabelas unisulated Guidewear, a set of Cabela's Insulated Guidewear, and a set of BPS 100MPH gear. I have worn the Cabela's stuff extensively in Alaska in the winter. I've only worn the BPS Gear a time or two.
I have to say that I prefer the Cabela's Guidewear over the BPS stuff. (Both are WON BASS Sponsors, so hopefully I won't be doing a disservice by giving truthful advice on thier gear)
The Cabela's Insulated Guidewear is so warm, that I would only recommend it for the nastiest of weather. Even when I was Shrimping and Crabbing in 10 degree weather, I had to unzip it often to cool down. For most of what we experience here in California, the unisulated Guidewear with a sweatshirt underneath will keep you plenty warm. The Insulated Guidewear does run a bit big in the sizing, so purchase accordingly.
The Cabela's gear has more thoughtfully designed pockets which are easier to access and get into when wearing gloves, etc...
The BPS gear does keep you dry and is windproof, but does not seem to wear as comfortably for me and I don't like the way the pockets open or the stiching on the gear.
In a nutshell, buy the Cabela's Guidewear and you won't be displeased.
