Reeds for 01 225 Optimax?

Post by drew »

The factory only offers complete blocks. Are there any other options?

I had Bosesin (spelling ?) reeds put in mine when I had it rebuilt. Theyre made of fiber not metal. Theyre well worth the money !!! Much better throttle response and if you should ever suck a reed, they don't eat a piston when it happens.

I can't believe that there are only a few aftermarket companies selling replacement reeds for these engines.

So far I have come up with Chris Carson and Boyesen. I will call CCM next week and post some info about his products. I have heard a rumor that the Boyesen units can cause a lean condition at certain engine speeds. It just a rumor and most likely BS, but I don't want to find out the hard way.

I've had Boyesen reeds in my motor since I first bought the boat. When I did suck a reed, it just desintigrated and caused no damage to the cylinder wall. A metal one would have probably caused a lot more damage. The newer models have solved any problems with chipping or breakage unless you over rev in neutral. This is what I was told by a reputable mechanic anyway. I've been happy with them.

I have heard that you have to replace the fiber reeds alot more often tha metal. I do not know this to be fact but something to look into.

I had Boyesen reeds in my 2005 225 Optimax, I blew them out a few months back in very rough water, I accidentally got off the hot foot too abruptly, just for a second, then back on it hard, that's what can blow the fiber reeds out according to my mechanic. He recommended I put in the metal merc reeds, which cost more but he considers them more durable. Runs better than ever now!!
