Tom Buckalew and Brett DeLong (Team Quantum) took first place honors in the initial edition for the 2008 San Diego Saltwater Bass Showdown Series Saturday afternoon on Mission Bay. The teams' five spotted bay bass limit weighed in at 10.38 pounds besting the field of 32 boater and kayak teams. Along with the second largest bass caught in the tournament award (2.71 pounds) this team took home a hefty $575 for their efforts. Most of the team's fish were caught on chartreuse/white and orange/brown spinnerbaits.
Second place was awarded to Captain Bill Schaefer and Brandon Cotton with a nice five bass limit weighing in at 9.62 pounds.
Third place went to the Kayak teams of Dave Easton and Brian Sanner with 9.26 pounds.
The largest bass of the tournament was caught by Mike York and David Morgan on a spinnerbait. The fatty hit the scales at 3.02 pounds and was good for $185 in big fish money!
There was also a fun option for the largest halibut of the contest and that prize went to Jason Millard and John Trotter with a 6.13 pound keeper. Many of the teams reported catching halibut up to 20 pounds during the tournament but were not wise enough to enter the halibut option.
We made it a little more difficult for Showdown fishermen because they were asked to bring in bass to the weigh-in that were 13" in length or over.

Tommy Gomes from Catalina Offshore Products and Unibutter fame provided the fishermen with an outstand barbeque fish taco meal. All the fishermen were also generous in their donations taken up for Showdown Team member Eddie Ceiplis in critical condition in the I.C.U. of Grossmont Hospital. From all of us Eddie, get better! There are more fish and fishermen to be landed before your time is up.
Special thank yous are in order for all the Showdown Sponsors: El Cajon Ford, Catalina Offshore Products, Hamilton Meats, Quantum/Zebco, Gamakatsu, SPRO Products, Rod and Reel Radio, Specialty Produce, Angler's Arsenal, Western Plastics, Captain Mike's, Ungroup & Unbuttered.
The next San Diego Showdown event is scheduled for May 10 and will be conducted out of Oceanside Harbor. Calico and Sand Bass will be the competing team's target for this next stop of the Showdown Series. Now I understand there is some other event on the 10th. If need be we can change the Oceanside event to the 11th. Let me know if you'd like to do that. John 619 466 8355
