Rod for paddle tail swimbaits

Post by firebass911 »

Looking to get a new rod for the basstrix, money minnow, paddle tail type baits. Probably going to chose Powell, which I have alot of, or Dobyns. Would like a shorter rod for ease of pitching the baits in tight places. Thanx

For paddle tail baits I like to use the Dobyns 733C. Its also what I use for ripping vibration baits and shallow cranks through grass and I also use it for spinner baits to. Its agood all around rod. I like it for the paddle tail baits because of the quick action. I feel it allows the fish to really draw in the bait and it has enough back bone to really drive the single hooks home and get the fish in the boat! I hope this helps!

I used my Dobyns DX 733C a couple of times, but I found it a little underpowered. It casts the paddle tails with ease, but I like more power in the rod to drive the hook in, especially on long casts and with the heavier gauge wire that most weighted hooks use. I like the DX 734C for the above reasons. The Dobyns 735C is also very popular for paddle tails and I will try it once I get one.

As far as pitching, I find that a longer rod makes pitching easier. Neither the 733C or 734C is unwieldy or difficult to pitch paddle tails. The 7'3" length enables me to pitch farther and with more ease than with a shorter rod.

Thanx for all of the input. Went with another Powell. Hard to make brand switch.
