Round Reels Vs. Low Profile Reels

Post by Lance »

Hey everyone,

I have a question thats been bugging me. When and why would someone want to use, need to use and should use round reels. This question does not pertain to swimbait fishing but worm, jig and reaction fishing. I think I saw someone say that you should be using a round reel for Carolina fishing.....Why?

Round reels usually hold more line, thats the main reason a guy will choose one. Most have a lower gearing for better cranking power too, although obviously you can get that in a low pro as well. For reaction baits, worming, etc....well, some guys just like how they look and feel eventhough w/ those techniques theres no real apparent advantage with one...just personal preference. I prefer round in saltwater, but for Bass I go low pro.

I always thought the same thing, because my hands aren't that big, and my fingers aren't that long.

Cooch for example, can palm those big round Ambassadors. They fit him just fine.

My other friend Butch has really big fingers. He cannot get to some of the thumbar/spool combonations on some of these tiny Japanese reels. His thumb is too wide to use it. I took him a new little reel I had bought to show it off. It was too tiny for him to use the spool, and he just handed it back. In his paws it was worthless.
