California Bass Nation Kayak Division held their first annual “Frogs Only” kayak tournament on the California Delta on Saturday, 7/10/21. Anglers were limited to hollow body frogs, buzz frogs, and toads. Buzzbaits were allowed but the skirt had to be removed and a toad had to be the trailer. Only 3 rods and 2 Plano 3600/3700 boxes were allowed on the boat. Each boat was inspected prior to launch by tournament officials to ensure an even playing field. Paradise Point and King Island launch ramps were the 2 authorized launch locations (voted on by the anglers in advance).
36 hard-core kayakers endured the extreme weather to see who would capture the title. With a high of 107 degrees and water temps in the low 80s anglers were anticipating a red hot summer frog bite. However, the bass weren’t quite ready to hammer the frog today and many competitors reported short strikes and bumps, but few hookups. Only 11 of the 36 anglers were able to secure the 3 fish limit.
Ultimately it was Jorge Ruelas of Merced, CA who was able to secure the inaugural event title with a 52.5 inch 3 fish limit anchored by his 19-inch big fish. Ruelas reported make a long run early and catching his limit on a hollow body frog in 1 to 2 feet of water right up against the bank. He reported that he was done fishing by 10:00 AM. Ruelas is a veteran bass angler but new to the kayak scene. He is off to an impressive start with 3 top five finishes in his first 3 kayak tournaments (Clear Lake, Lake Don Pedro, and now CA Delta).
Big Fish of the tournament was 19 inches and shared by Ruelas and Greg Blanchard. Since Greg’s fish was submitted 8 minutes sooner, he secured the first big fish honors.
