Safety behind proposal to ban personal watercraft at Camanche

In an effort to improve safety and create a family-friendly environment at Lake Camanche, East Bay Municipal Utilities District is proposing changes to its rules and regulations in the coming weeks.

In December, the EBMUD Board of Directors will consider a proposal to ban personal watercraft next year. Personal watercraft, the district said, would be a vessel as long as 13 feet, propelled by machinery and designed to be operated by a person sitting, standing, or kneeling, such as jet skis or hydrofoils.

The proposal aims to address a “significant” number of incidents resulting in personal injuries at the reservoir, as well as conflicts between watercraft operators and swimmers, and violations of associated boating laws.
