El Salto Trip

Post by shlbsnake »

I am going to El Salto on Dec 26th and staying at the El Salto Lodge for 5 nights. I was wondering if anyone has stayed here and could recommend a guide. They supply their own guides but I was wondering if anyone has had a good experience for a particular guide at this lodge. If you have a particular guide that you had a bad experience, that would be good info also.

I have been to Salto several times, however we book with Pro Bass Adventures which has its lodge lakeside. I can only tell you to trust your guide and their local knowledge...to a point. Remember, it is your trip, your money so if by some chance you get a guide that only wants to fish a particular way and you want to try something different then make your decision of how you wish to handle it. I can say that through Pro Bass Adventures I have had only top notch guides but have heard stories to the contray with other places. Hope that the timing of your trip is when the nets are down but even if they are up you can work around them most of the time. Have fun and enjoy, it is a great place.

I have been to el salto 7 times. i stayed at anglers inn and think they are great . if you have trouble with a guide just remind them that this might affect their tip . some of them act like they don't speak english but as soon as you talk money SURPRIZE!!

Thanks for the replies. I have been there once and I stayed at Anglers Inn and had a great experience. We had a guide that was reccomended by Richard Pounds of Clear Lake and it was pretty darn amazing. I am counting down the days.

I would ask the lodge staff which guide has lived and fished in the area the longest, some of the guides will probably also be commercial tilapia fisherman. They know where the big bass are because they are where the tilapia are. Also a spainish phrase book can go a long way because the language barrier can become a problem. It will be the trip of a lifetime though, have a blast!

I always found phrase books a funny idea. You now ask a question, that been translated for you, in a language you don't know and then they answer in a string of words/sentences in a language you don't know.

?Donde esta el bano?
(where is the bathroom?)

Hay que bajar a la esquina y doble a la derecha, es el segundo negocio de la izquierda.

In a prior trip many years ago to Baccarac, some guys we met who go every year did this thing with their guide. 7 lb fish = extra $20 tip. 8 lb fish = extra $30. 10 lb fish extra $50. Or something like that. You come up with a rate that works for you, and bring a scale. this is arranged prior to going out so the guide knows that you mean business. Then if they help you succeed, then make sure you pay 'em. Money talks down there. good luck.

For those who have replied thanks, and I was wondering how many senkos/Stik o s to buy I have about 100 or so watermelon and green pumpkin (total) and about 30 or so blue/blk ones and some misc colors. I was thinking if I catch even 50 fish a day,if I remember the tear them up pretty bad I will need to buy a bunch more. I will be fishing for 5 full days. any thoughts?

I went a couple of years ago and had the same concerns regarding how many plastic baits to bring. The best thing I did was pack two bottles of Mend-it. Everyday at lunch I mended all of our baits that weren't completely destroyed. I was even able to keep a couple of young guys from Alaska from running out of their favorite baits.
Don't leave home without it
