Seafoam-Ring Free-Techron

Post by FishDiver »

I just called a local shop for the current price on Ring Free and almost fainted when I heard the quote. Are Ring Free and Seafoam any different than the Techron concentrate I can buy at Walmart?

Will any of them degunk a carbureted engine that is running a bit rough or are they only good for satisfying new engine warranties?

Why not just buy the sea foam? It's pretty cheap, about $10 a can at Napa.

Crap  ....I have been using Ring Free in my '85 Mercury for a couple years now. Sounds like for the price, Sea Foam is the way to go?
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

Found Seafoam for $10 at Kragen. Poured a full can in a six gallon tank of fresh Chevron gas and another in a tank of older discount gas. The new gas ran like a champ, the old gas ran like it was half water.

My engine starts up and runs fine cold. When I start it hot, it idles no problem, but dies when I crank up the throttle. Is the water in the old ethanol killing it?

An easy way to find out is to siphon out the gas from your tank, and look for water in the bottom of the siphon bucket.
I got some bad gas from Pilot a few years ago, and that's what I did.
My 4 stroke was running raggedy, so I thought that might be the problem.
Sure enough, there was water in the gas. I dumped the gas into my pickup truck until I got down to the dirty stuff at the bottom of the bucket, poured the dirty gas/water over some sawdust, and disposed of it.
Then I put new gas in the boat, and all was well.

You should install a 10 micron in line water seperator fuel filter. You would eleminate water and other contaminates from entering your engine, that gets by the engine mounted fuel filter. This addition could save you a costly overhaul. It's canister type filter.

Keeping your fuel tanks FULL in storage would also eleminate condensation build up. If you use good quality gas, change the filter element and use gas drier once a year you shouldn't ever have any issues. Works for me.

Good Fishin.
