The fly "micro" guides are readily available at most rod building websites and single foot guides are easy to replace, but I don't imagine the guides will be failing anytime soon. I've built one rod with micro guides, I've yet to really fish it. I'm building some other rods with "big ...

Yeah, what he said.
Even after fishing a while, the line will tend to "unpack" on the spool. If you notice this, just make a really long cast and then pinch the line above the reel and retrieve it in to "repack" the spool.

All of them
I've seen more than a few picutres of dropshot baits and finesse worms with a 10+ lb fish attached to them.
But I'd put my money on a 6-7" swimbait or a bulky jig, those two gotta be the best "kicker fish" baits out there.

When I put new rims and tires on my boat trailer, I did not have an idea as to the weight, so I just played it safe. Play it safe and figure that your trailer/boat weighs about 1800 lbs. A standard 205/75R15 trailer tire has a weight rating of about 1200 lbs. so two of those, you're talking 2400 lb ...

Since you asked this question, I think I need to build a swim jig rod.
For ~1/4-3/8 swim jigs.
Shikari 7'2", 3 power, Moderate action, custom turned EVA grip and micro guides. Hot pink and metallic blue wraps.
Curado 101B
I'm thinking 12 lb P-Line Halo, or 10 lb P-Line CXX.

It was a colored tag near the dorsal fin like the picture, right?
That is a FLOY tag, usually used for mark-recapture studies.
The story describes electronic (acoustic?) tag in the body cavity. These would be for tracking studies an the like.
