Shimano Core

Post by bigjosh15 »

I am also thinking about buying a Shimano Core, and Putting it on a Dobyns Savvy. I have a few questions about this reel.
Whats the Different between the 50MG, 100MG, and 100MGFV? And which one is the best?
My biggest concern is how much line it holds. 12lb test for only 90 yards? So does this mean 15 or 17 or even 20lb test for 60 yards? Is this reel meant just for Small line, or flipping? Whats your 2 cents? Thanks again.

Josh I have about 15 Cores and think there great! Th FV model stands for flipping version cause it has a flipping switch. All I have is the 101s and never have an issue with line capacity! I think if I had the 50 series I would either have it for light line or a small diameter line like braid. All of them are on Phenix Rods. I would think if you wanted a Dobyns I would pare this reel with a champion or elite model! Just my personal opinion!

The 50 and 51 are there smallest size. The 100 and 101 is slightly larger. The MG stands for magnesium and the FV for flipping version, it has an instagage system for flipping. Those small Cores are great reels for casting light baits they and the Metanium DC are the best for light baits I have found so far. The Diawa pixy is also nice for light baits. I have 5 of the Core 51's in 7:1 retrieve and 4 Aldebaran 51's, 2 @ 5:8 and 2 @ 7:1 which are the same reel just the Japanese version. You cant go wrong with a core 50 or 51 if you like small and light reels. They are about the same weight as the Diawa Steez 5.5 oz. If you want a slower retrieve in the same style and weight you can get an Aldebaran off Ebay in 5.8 at 5.5 oz as well. TW has all the info you may need on the Core's. The Metanium DC's are awesome and a little larger but they will set you back about $500.00 and are a japanese model as well so you need to use Ebay to get those, they are about the size of a Curado 200.

The "BEST" reel is very subjective. In my hands, it will likely be very different than in your hands. That said, the 50MG is a very different reel than either the 100Mg or the 100MgFV.

The 100MgFV has a flipping switch that is similar to the one on the Castaic 100B. Overall, the 100Mg and the 100MgFV are similar body sizes. But the 50Mg is a very different body size; smaller and slightly lighter.

That said, I have 5-6 100MgFV's because I fish the delta a lot. But if you're fishing light line more, then maybe you'd like the 50Mg better. My suggestion is go try one out if you have a friend who has one then decide. Because 'playing' with them in the store really would not be THAT informative; especially with a sales guy at your ear! :)

Great reels, but don't expect the castability of a Calais or Chronarch MG for the lighter stuff in my opinion.

I agree with you guys, if you are gonna spend the money on a core....get a champion but i would highly reccomend champion extreme.

Big Josh...

First what SAVY SERIES MODEL WHERE YOU CONSIDERING???

Now I am a TRUE SHIMANO GUY... I do have a few others from other companys But i prefer shimano reels over most.. Spinning and casting.. I do not own that many cores i have a mix of everything and i appreciate the value every reel offers considering th price tag...

To stay on subject investing in a core is not a bad road to take for fishing small to medium size baits.. now if your going to throw slammers or giant huds, then this is the wrong reel.. I own 5 cores. i bought 1 and just kept collecting when could. I own the 50, 100 and 100mfg... now if i were to choose between all three and pick one i would get 100 mfg since i like to pitch almost everything and have the option to flip. even though these reels are 100 size series reels do not let that mislead you. 2 of my 5 gores are spooled with mono. 1 has 15lb maxima and the other 20lb. i use these on the delta for throwing blades, spooks, chatterbaits, big senkos, mission fish, 1 oz buzzjets and others... these reels hold plenty of line!! beside when did a bass spool 20 yards of line off your reel last?

Now i do have another core spooled with 80lb samurai braid. This reel sits on my 736 dobyns champion. i throw medium size swimbaits, frogs, punch and other things. Again the reels performs without issues.

If your going to go with a light action rod that fine to with a core.. The reel only weigh about 6 ounces, they are super light!!
nothing better that fishing a finesse style rod with a super light and smooth reel. I have a cronarch d7 and a calais...If the money was on the table right now , i'd go with a core again!!

That's good to hear yours cast as well as the Chronarch 50 MGs, I was dissapointed with the castability of my Core 50. I like how well it palms and how much crankin' power it has, but the distance I can cast is not nearly as far as my 50 MG Chronarchs or Calais.

I had to mess with the weights on my core50. I never adjust the weights on my curados. But the core50's need the weights moved. I can bomb the 50 with light stuff! I love the 50mgs!

I'm sure you already know this but have you played around with the braking system and such to get it to cast better?

I played with the brake and with the pegs, but just not as satisfied. I really like how little effort it takes to cast and pitch with the other two reels I mentioned. It may be that it has an excessive amount of grease from the factory, but I really don't want to take it apart... :? but I just may if you guys are not having the same complaint.

All and all the core is a great reel..but man I hate that thing.. ..i had the 100mg..
im so glad that i got that thing for free..OMG..i wouldve been really upset if i bought it with my own money..just sold mines not to long ago for 250 just to get rid of it..that brake system is horrible..yeah you do need to adjust and get a feel for it but when the clocks running against you and you are only limited to 5 setups..having a rod that cannot handle many situations or setups just dont cut it..and for that price..wow far fetched..settle for a zillion..and save yourself the time and the cash..
