SHIMANO CURADO VS. ABU GARCIA SX

Post by bigjosh15 »

I am wondering which one is better between the New Shimano Curados or the Abu Garcia SX. I have heard alot about the Curado's and the same with the SX but am having a hard time deciding which one to get????

Theyr both great reels, it all depends on wich one you like better. I personaly like the curado and it's centrifugal brake better than the revo's magnetic brake. But you can get a revo sx for pretty cheap right now, for the price they'r hard to beat.

I have both and use them both on differnt rods during the same fishing trip. I have the Revos for heavy stuff using a higher drag setting, hate to put 65lb power pro on a reel with 10 or 11lbs of drag

But would be good with either brand

Simply put, you can't go wrong buying either of them..Both are fantastic reels for general purpose bass fishing..I own and use both and have no complaints on either..

I Like Shimano reels. I like the handels on a Shimano better and they seem to fit my hand better. Again thats personal preference. I see you are from the Delta. For punching and pitching You can't go wrong with the Diawa Zillions.
Like Rod mentioned earlier the drags on the shimanos are not as strong as the Revos or the Zillions. You won't be disappointed with any of these reels. JIm

Ya I have tryed both and I really like them and I think that I will probably get both....also I hear the Pflueger President reel is really good to so I will try that out also.

But the only thing that I wasnt so impressed about was the Shimano citca I felt it and it just feels rough. But I guess for the price, it's alright.

I think that Im just gunna try the Curado, SX, and The President reels :D :D :D Hopefully have good success with all of them.

What Curados are falling apart? I see OLD ones on Ebay for 100+ bucks.

Curados are better. On paper and in the hands. I have thrown them both and hard. The curado is like butter then Revo starts whining after a while. Not to mention the braking system is a joke. I havent even started on the parts comparison would you like cheap plastic or quality materials?

Then again that 24lbs of drag is SO needed when you have 8-15 lb line on. Or heck 65lb braid. Its called overcompensation for not having the smooth consistent drag of a Shimano......

As harsh as that sounds. You aren't gonna notice a difference if you are only gonna go in and buy a Revo, you aren't going to lose a fish or whatknot either. To me its just the quality and customer service of Shimano.

if it breaks its fixed no questions.

That's pretty much to the point. The quality of the Company and People behind Shimano Products are the best! I'm servicing and sending back 15 year old Curados that work like new to this day, with just a little maintenance and care. There are few other Co's that can say that about a product. They have been and will remain the benchmark. I love when people say, quote, "just as good as a Shimano"! Point made!

That said, if the old Curados live to 15+ years and beyond, I can only imagine what kinda lifespan the new E series will have,
20,25?

What are those reels we were buying back in the late 70s early 80s that never needed work. Matter of fact I still have a couple of them that have never been worked on.

Oh they were Abu Garcias 5000-cs and 4600s :D :D

Now those were some good reels

I think back then they were around $49

i have 3 stx now and love them. curados are nice reels but revos fit in my had perfect and are comfortable to fish with all day. I have never had a problem with the drag system or with the gears. They are sweet reels in my opinion.

I agree, the magnetic brakes alone suck.

wow that was a vehement retort to my post.

I'll reply by saying that I have a bunch of shimano sahara's that I love, and a couple cardiff 400a which I like fine, and I've owned 2 curados....a 3.8:1 I used as a crankbait reel that had its brake die after 1 year...and a bantam curado 6.3:1 whose brake died after a year and a half.

I own 3 revo s and now a new stx. Love them...never had a problem.

and now I own a diawa zillion 7.3:1...I let you know but I expect good things.

I don't think curado's are bad, and on paper I understand the appeal. Tackletour has done some nice reviews too. But like a BMW...you would accept certain flaws to get the nice reel....I don't like that my brakes went out so easily...So I look elsewhere.

Yep, that's why I said few. However, let's compare apples to apples. Low profile to low profile. Round reels are a totally different animal all together.

I have felt both S and Sx and really liked them, and after watching the Randy Pringle video on the STX they look really nice.

But as far as the Red Zillons which are now $200 bucks at Tackleware house, I felt them at BPS once, when they first came out and ,liked them just never casted one???

The technology is balancing fairly well across the board from all real companies now. As usual you will get people that are only for this or only for that, but when it comes down to it, you need to open your mind and use reals from multiple companies to find the ones that fit you the most.
